MuseScore is Amazing

• May 13, 2009 - 21:26

Hi all,

Many thanks to the author(s) of MuseScore. I am a first time user with MuseScore version 0.9.4, revision 1518, on Windows XP. My main interest is transcribing music from ear to score but the MuseScore playback is delightful. I hope to have more time to help in future but for now will just share my initial experience in case I found bugs you would like to address.

* MuseScore flips my choice of tie and stem direction. I finally gave up trying to change them back.

* MuseScore lets me create a custom 7/8 time but does not present it in the Time palette and I was not able to use it.

* MuseScore occasionally made unexpected global changes, far from the measure I was working on. To avoid losing more work, I made frequent saves to XML, then reloaded from XML and started fresh. This process worked better if somewhat awkward.

* MuseScore introduced subtle garbage, especially when inserting measures or using multiple time signatures, that were hard to fix without hacking "" and other noise from intermediate XML's.

* I was unable to coerce a "1.-2." text to remain in my Volta Properties; it always reloaded as "1".

* I was not able to create a tie between two notes when the first lived in measure just before Volta 1 and second note lived in Volta 2. So the melody is properly tied during first repeat, but sounds as two notes during second traversal.

Otherwise, I ended up with a pretty neat score for Liz Story's "17 Seconds To Anywhere."

Many thanks to all.

Thanks, Thomas.

I was able to save much more with MuseScore-r1770. I could not eliminate (accumulated?) garbage in last three measures of mscz file and did not save to XML, fix, and reload XML as this evidently drops the alignment of my rests with the other notes in its voice. (Rests came back from XML overlapping a different voice's notes.)

Regards,
Dave.

I noticed that you are reporting to types of issues: MusicXML import and export and just over overall MuseScore user experience issues.

Regarding the musicXML export/import: I would advice to save your work with the mscz or mscx format. Thats the MuseScore format which stores all the data, whereas the MusicXML file may not store everything correctly yet as you have noticed with the volta numbers.

Let's go through your initial list and submit them one by one (if still applicable) into the issue tracker. It's important to leave the exact steps in order to reproduce the problem. Otherwise it's very hard to fix the issues.

I have some questions and an explanation for some of your specific points at the top of this thread.

You said "MuseScore flips my choice of tie and stem direction. I finally gave up trying to change them back."
Could you give more details including steps to reproduce this problem? Or is this problem only in the 0.9.4 release.

"MuseScore lets me create a custom 7/8 time but does not present it in the Time palette and I was not able to use it."
It doesn't appear in the palette in the side bar but you can use the 7/8 time from the palette where you created it. Just drag and drop.

"MuseScore occasionally made unexpected global changes, far from the measure I was working on. To avoid losing more work, I made frequent saves to XML, then reloaded from XML and started fresh. This process worked better if somewhat awkward."
Could you give details about these "unexpected global changes"?
