Concert pitch to fingered pitch creates incorrect key signatures

• Mar 1, 2014 - 22:13

Running 1.3 on Windows 8; had been running 1.2 successfully on Windows 7
Have score with multiple key changes --- changing from concert pitch to fingered pitch, or reverse, creates varied and incorrect key signatures. Note pitches are correct, with all the necessary accidentals.
No problem dragging and dropping them, but they change when moving in and out of concert pitch.

In addition to posting the score you are having problems with,. please post the exact steps to reproduce the problem - precise, step by step instructions so we can be sure we are doing the same as you. And describe both what you expect to see and what you actually see, or we won't know what to look for. The we'll be able to figure out if if there is some sort of bug or if maybe you are doing something incorrectly or perhaps are mixunderstanding how it is supposed to work.

Thanks, Marc and Jojo --- find score attached (just started it) for sax quartet, S/A/T/B
Just started running 1.3 in Windows 8; there had been no problem w/ 1.2 in Windows 7.
So far, there are four key signatures: F/Ab/D/Bb (which I think I have resurrected).
When I toggle the "concert pitch" key, I would expect the fingered key signatures to be G/D/G/D, Bb/F/Bb/F, E/B/E/B, C/G/C/G.
Instead, they become B/D/G/D, D/F/C/D, Ab/Ab/Ab/F, Db/D/D/E.
However, the pitches themselves remain correct, as are all the added accidentals. Playback is fine.
In addition, the double bar lines disappear when toggling.
When I loaded a previous arrangement into the program (also enclosed), the same thing happened.
My arrangement process includes much toggling back and forth.
I do hope that you can help.

Are you talking about the 60's medley? The keys work as expect for me - D for the Eb instruments, G for the Bb. Maybe it was a temporary glitch? Have you tried reloading the score?

Similarly, the other score loaded up already with concert pitch off, showing the keys of D and G, and when I turned on concert pitch, they all turned to F as I would expect.

Sorry, Marc --- I've tried reloading and uninstall/re-install w/ no improvement. The key signatures are completely wacky!
When I toggle from concert to fingered back to concert, many notes come up red/out of range.
Reloading does fix that, at least. I tried a couple of nightlies, but got a "missing Qt5core.dll" message, and gave up at that point.
Any other suggestions?
I am grateful for your diligence -- merci bien.

When did you try a nightly? There shouldn't be any such errors on Windows. Linux users may have to take extra steps.

Since it seems to behave differently for you on 1.3 than for everyone else, maybe you could take a screenshot video (using something like screenr.com) and post it so we can see if maybe you are doing something different?

Today I have been told by a fellow professional musician/software programmer, an avid Musescore fan, that this issue is a known bug in 1.3, and that it won't be fixed due to the imminent release of 2.0. For now, he is using Sibelius, and will return to Musescore upon the release of 2.0.
I have tried a couple of nightlies, but they require Qt5core.dll, which I am missing, evidently.
Are there any that are reasonably stable and do not require this, or is there an easy way to install it? Working around the bug is excessively time consuming, and my screen time is limited due to vision impairments.
I remain hopeful, and thank you for your response.

There *are* bugs in the transposition feature, but they show up only in very specific corner cases. Simply pressing the concert pitch button on a normal score is supposed to work, and as we've said, when we load your score, it *does* work. So I'm not sure if something is different about your system, or if it is that you are somehow doing things differently. That's why i asked if you could post a screenshot video. It's the only way I can think of to be able to tell. Start from firing up MuseScore, then load the score, then press concert pitch. It would be about a 20 second video tops, but it might yield a clue.

As for the nightlies, as I asked before, when did you last try? It's certainly possible there might have been a brief period a few months ago when a DLL was needed abive and beyond what comes with it, but if so that was a bug fixed long ago. Not that i'd recommend trying to actually use a nightly build for real work - they aren't ready yet. 1.3 is far more stable.

I also have this problem fairly frequently. Attached is a score I was just playing around with that does this.
-I open the file (in concert pitch)
-I click the "Concert Pitch" button in the top left to take it out of concert pitch
-I click it again and strange key signatures appear.
As stated before, all the pitches are correct, I just have to manually go back and replace all the offending key signatures to remove the accidentals.

This file has been imported between multiple machines, I wonder if that has something to do with it? The computer I'm using now is Windows 8.1 with Musescore version 1.3, but this file was previously worked on on a machine that had Windows 7 and Musescore Portable (run from a USB flash drive). I also occasionally use Musescore 1.3 on a Mac OSX 10.6, though this file has not been opened on that one.

I won't worry about it if it's been fixed for 2.0. Just thought maybe I could help troubleshoot in the meantime.

Thanks so much quant --- weird thing is, the toggle works with your score on my computer. I haven't a clue, being a musician and just enough techie knowledge to be dangerous. I've "worked around" my scores, pretty much arranging in fingered pitch, e.g. too many ledger lines for me to count for bari sax in concert pitch, etc. (I've got some vision impairments.) Thus, eagerly awaiting 2.0 as well.
"Animaniacs" is a very cute score --- good luck in its completion.

Is there a particular instrument where you are seeing strange key signatures? When I load your score, I see Concert Pitch is turned on, and all key signatures are Ebma / Cmi (three flats). When I press Concert Pitch to turn it off, I see alto & bari, go to C, trumpet & tenor to F, horns to Bb - exactly as they should. I can go back and forth all day and it keeps being correct. This is with MuseScore 1.3 on Windows 7. So could you describe the problem you are seeing in more detail?

In reply to by Marc Sabatella

Huh, this is weird. I just opened this file again and took it back and forth from concert pitch several times (Windows 7, Musescore 1.3 portable). It is working just fine now. Maybe it is a matter of restarting Musescore when this happens? I will try it again later today on a different computer and see what happens.

I don't remember particular instruments, but I do remember that sometimes different parts for the same instrument would have different key signatures (i.e. Trumpet 1 and 2 would be different).
