Maybe you changed the setting your self? Or you had paused playback?
I don't think the software has changed on this matter.
A few weeks ago I was using software that used the shortcut Ctrl+Space for start and stop of playback. Maybe this is a possibility for MuseScore (since Space is already taken). However there would be a conflict in chordname and lyric entry that would need to be resolved.
Yes, I was in play mode.
To me it would seem overly complex to use control-space or some other 2-part command.
