Multiple non-pitched percussion on single staff

• Apr 29, 2024 - 23:18

I need to have base and snare drums and triangle in the score. Currently I have three separate single line staffs, one for each and thus there is no question about the note choice from the drum set when entering notes. However I read in the manual that I can use a single multi-line staff and then it would look like the actual score where different lines are used for each instrument. Not sure how to do this. I can edit one of my existing staffs assigned to say base drum and increase the line count but the staff thinks it is only for base drum and not sure how to get others on the staff. What instrument do I select when adding instruments for this situation where the instrument can be any percussion who notes are then chosen from all drum set notations available and assigned to a particular line and voice? Not sure of the mechanics. Also how does the staff get lables when there are lots of insturments say I need three lines of text?

So I tried the multi line Percussion staff. Now I need to add notes. So I enter the add mode and the edit drumkit shows the notes available. For the single line snare, I used Piccolo Snare which shows as a number 40. But when I open the Edit Drum Kit window, there are lots of notes with instrument names including Acoustic Snare as a number 38. But number 40 has nothing assigned. How is available to the single line unpitched staff where the instrument is uniquely assigned, but not available in the drum kit and if it is not pre-defined there, how do I make it available so I can select it when adding notes to the multi-line percussion staff?

Your question is difficult to formulate (for me), but I will try to answer it. If you want to add a piccolo snare drum (a single-line staff) to the score, then you can do it easily by adding the appropriate instrument from the suggested list. So I gather all you can add is those instruments specifically identified in the map for the combined staff. I find it odd that the instrument exists for a single line staff but not for the combined.. so it is obviously in the system so why not. The question I have is that any of the unused MIDI numbers can be used and you can fill out the number, the staff line and all the other config params. There are references to what the standard MIDI numbers are starting at 35 for a bass drum. Since 40 (or whatever or picollo snare) is not defined, does editing the drum set adding 40 and all params and five it a name, still not reference the underlying sound? Is it truly not capable of being manually added. SO that being the case, why have the edit drum kit feature if you cannot additional sounds (assuming that there really is a sound reference for palyback.)

I don't see anything odd here, because Musescore doesn't yet have (I say so because I hope it will be soon after all) an option for notating a multi-percussion staff with a choice of any instruments. But there are also some workarounds using third-party sound fonts. If you tell me which percussion instruments you would like to see on one staff, I will try to do it.
I repeat that there is already a corresponding request on GitHub for the implementation of such an option, and I sincerely hope that someday (but preferably in the near future) this will be implemented.

Not an issue. I was curious about how you can edit and add to a drum kit. There are many MIDI numbers that are unassigned to the combined percussion staff but exist in single line percussion. I thought you could just assign the details to the number that is unassigned, like the piccolo snare (40?) and fill out the details and do a save and the system would automatically make it available for playback on the mulit-line. It's a matter of mechanics. I will continue the three separate single line unpitched percussion for now.

It doesn't work that way. There is no such instrument as a Piccolo Snare Drum in General MIDI at all. And the fact that, as you think, the piccolo drum refers to the number 40 is incorrect. 40 is the MIDI note number for one of the varieties of the snare drum — the Electric Snare Drum (alternatively, Snare Drum 2) in channel 10 of General MIDI, which is allocated exclusively for percussion. And in fact, when you add a Piccolo Snare Drum to the score (in the form of a single-line staff), when you enter the notes, you do not hear a real piccolo drum, but that very Snare Drum 2 at number 40. Thus, in a percussion staff, you can get only those instruments that are registered in GM channel 10, but no more.
