Tablature Conversion

• May 3, 2024 - 01:33

I am having trouble converting this short piece of music to tablature notation for electric guitar. I have tried following the instructions provided by Musescore and online video tutorials without success. I would greatly appreciate any help!

Instructions for MuS 4 (I don't have MuS 3, but it should still be possible?)

1) Simply open the file in MuseScore. This will create a standard notation score.
2) Go to the Instruments tab near upper left. There will be a single instrument, labeled "Guitar".
3) Click the arrow immediately to the left of the word "Guitar" and it will show a single staff, labeled "Treble clef".
4) Click the gear at the right of "Treble clef".
5) From the new dialog, click the button to Create a linked staff. This will create a new staff, labeled "[LINK] Treble clef".
6) Now click the gear to the right of "[LINK] Treble clef".
7) At the top of the new dialog, under "Staff Type", select one of the "Tab. 6-str." entries: "simple", "common", or "full". Personally I always use the "full" option; others prefer the "common" option and a very few people prefer the "simple" option. Experiment with each to find your own preference. This changes the new standard notation staff to a tab staff.

You can make changes in either the standard staff or the tab staff. (I find it easier to do so in the standard notation staff, but I know others prefer the opposite.)

At first glance, you are going to have to do some serious editing to make this tab be playable. You've got a start but you may end up finding it easier to tab it out by ear. *shrug* It happens :-)

Thank you for your reply! I followed your instruction and it worked. You're right, it seems like it may have notated not only the guitar part, but also the keyboard. Do you have a recommendation for a program (or using musescore) to isolate the guitar in the song, so Musescore can detect the guitar notes better for transcription? Thanks again!

I suspect (!!!) that the reason the file imports into a single staff is because that's how it appears in the musicxml file.

[After inspecting the musicxml file] Yup, I was right. There's only a single "part" in the musicxml file. MuS can't separate something that isn't separated in the source. I'm afraid you will have to separate them yourself (or convince someone to do it for you).
