Interesting File Path

• Aug 8, 2019 - 15:33

So, I have been issued a laptop with the new school district I am working for and have stumbled across something very interesting. I am currently running a Dell Latitude E6430, as are most staff members in the district. I am running this same device with a brand new hard drive. Musescore 3 has downloaded perfectly, but when I try installing the MuseScore General HQ and MuseScore Drumline extensions, they are being routed to a district junk folder that is "full" and MuseScore is unable to complete the installation process. An IT staff member tried to help me reroute the software's installation path for the extensions, but was unable to do so. We tried checking the Score Properties under the File menu of MuseScore, but are unable to edit the installation path. Lastly, and most interestingly, the path route is written with forward slashes (//) which the IT staff member has informed me is a Mac function. The district issued Mac computers several years ago, but soon went back to running PC's again. How might I be able to reroute the direction of the extension files to my PC hard drive? I am anxious to here what the MuseScore hive mind has to say about this and so is the IT staff member. :)

A "full" folder is often a sign that you do not have write access to that folder. If the folder were actually full the entire disk would have to be full. In the menu Edit->Preferences, you can set the path where MuseScore will look for soundfonts and extensions. I would say the easiest way to make installation work is to get write access to the folders. You have probably installed MuseScore as an administrator and now run it as a user. Running MuseScore as an administrator usually fixes your issue.

People install the MDL extension without problems on Windows systems all the time, so I wouldn't worry about the extra slashes you found in the path. MuseScore handles it fine when it automatically installs MDL.

I'm not sure what you mean about Soundfonts not being created. The preferences has a field for Soundfonts separate from extensions. The soundfonts, if successfully installed can be viewed in the synthesizer (menu View->Synthesizer is the only way to open it) in the Zerberus tab. You should see a list of drum names in this tab. There are several tutorials on using MDL at https://musescore.org/en/tutorials for further information.
