Issue With Musescore 3

• Aug 24, 2019 - 13:13

My son has to use your MuseScore (the free download) for his music appreciation class. He downloaded it as required by the teacher; however, he receives a "Radeon Settings: Host application has stopped working " error. The teacher suggested that we fill out this form for you to help. My son is using his K12 OHVA provided desktop computer which is an HP LV1911. He spoke with the K12 OHVA IT department and this is how we ended up here with you. When I checked for the problem, under "Problem signature it states:

I fail to see how a crash of a program names cnext.exe or Radeon Settings Jsome graphics card Driver?) could possibly related to Musescore who's program is named MuseScore3.exe.

And there is no non-free download...

I didn’t know when I posted on this forum that I would have people reply to me and say that they fail to see how something is related to musescore. This is in fact the error message that I received when I tried to get into muse score 3 with my student. Please do not imply that I have made something up.

I think the confusion is that you mentioned "MuseScore (the free download)" in your message, but we wanted to clarify for you, there is only a free download, there is no other version of MsueScore. It's always 100% free. There are additional things you can optionally choose to buy, like a subscription to the musescore.com website for sharing scores, but MuseScore itself is always free.

Please know that I knew nothing about this site until my sons teacher had him download it. There does appear to be a subscription side of this site, so how was I to know I didn’t need to give this much detail? I was merely trying to provide as much detail to get an answer, not get into an argument.

Right, no argument intended. We just wanted to make sure you were aware there was nothing extra you would need to pay for in order to use MsueScore. Some people get confused by the wording on musescore.com and sign up for the Pro account there thinking it is necessary in order to fully use MuseScore. We wanted to make sure you don't make that same mistake.

Hmm, I don't see anything there to suggest MuseScore is involved with this is in any way. It seems to involve some sort of program called "cnext.exe", which has nothing to do with MuseScore. Can you explain more about what you actually tried to do and where this information came from?

OK, so this message appeared when you tried to open the installer you downloaded? That was not clear from your original message, it just said the error appeared, not what action caused it. The fact that the error message doesn't reference MuseScore at all just added to our confusion. So hopefully you can understand why we needed to ask for more information to clarify

If the error appeared just running the installer - that is, you have not yet successfully installed MuseScore - then this suggests a problem with Windows and/or your graphics driver. I tried a web search for "install error cnext.exe" and found this:

https://appuals.com/fix-cnext-exe-cannot-start-because-msvcp120-dll-or-…

This seems relevant since we do make use of Qt. So probably the solution given there will fix the problem with your system and allow MuseScore (and other programs) to install correctly.
