Marc S told me a trick that appears to work in that case. (Can't tell for sure because my list is currently not long enough to test.)
Click on an item near the top of the list. Then use the Up arrow to move the selection up through the list until you reach the first item. Then press the Up arrow exactly once more and press Enter. This should move the cursor to the Clear recent files entry off the end of the displayed list and Enter "clicks" it.
Someone tell me whether this actually works once the list gets that long. If it doesn't work, I believe it will simply open the last displayed item on the list.
My understanding was that you weren't supposed to "click", but to use the keyboard shortcuts to navigate the menu. HOWEVER ...
Sadly, I am not finding that the trick I described above works. Once the "Reset recent scores" menu option has disappeared from the list, if you use the arrow keys (and other keyboard shortcuts) to move the selection to the top of the list and then up once more, and then press Enter, it appears that you get the 32nd item in the list, even though there are more than 50 items in the .JSON file's list.
At this point, I can find only two ways to reduce the recent file list size:
1. Manually edit the .JSON file. In Windows, it's located at %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4\recent_files.json. Presumably, it's at equivalent locations in Mac and Linux?
2. Delete (or rename) files that appear in the list while MuseScore is not running. On launch, MuseScore rebuilds the .JSON and if a given file does not exist, leaves it out. Over a year ago, I had a period when this did not work for me. I deleted the .JSON and let MuseScore rebuild it from scratch. This made it start working again.
FYI: The 50th entry in the Recent Scores list pushes the "Reset recent scores" menu option off the bottom of the list. With 50, you can just see (and click on) the entry, partially displayed at the bottom of the list. With 51, you cannot see it at all and thus cannot click it. (At least that's what I'm finding. YMMV.
I can't seem to use any of these answers. I run MS4 on a Windows 10 platform, am a computer kindergartner, and cannot find a way to delete old scores. Help?
Again: MuseScore doesn't delete scores, ever. It is simply lacking the capabilities to (and for good reason).
To delete score files from disk, you'd need to employ whatever your operating system has to offer, in your case Explorer.
Open your documents folder using the Explorer. There will you find a folder "Musescore 4". Open it and find the folder "Scores". Open it and all of your scores are there. Select one and press the "Del" key on your keyboard to delete it.
The files you find on the Musescores home screen are only links and can be deleted using the "Delete recent files" (or similar) command at the bottom of the list. All links will be deleted, but the score files will still be available. They can be reopened with the command "File -> Open" and they will be included in the link list again.
That "Delete recent files" is utterly missleading though and is about to get replaced bba "Delete list of recent files", which describes it much better

Will this delete them from the Recent Scores shown when opening the program? If so, what do you mean by rm on a Mac?
Thanks!

'rm` is the command for 'remove' on Linux and probably on a Mac (I don't know a Mac).
The 'Recent Scores' list is removable by 'Clear Recent Scores'.

There must be a step missing. Anytime I click on a score in either list, that score opens.
