different time signatures - bug?

• Apr 25, 2025 - 11:02

Hello!

I am preparing an orchestral score. I added all the instruments and the general time signature 12/8. But a few instruments will start in 4/4. I added it successfully to the English horn, and successfully to the bass clarinet. And when I come to the contrabassoon and add 4/4, the complete score switches to 4/4! Yes, I used ctrl+4/4 like in the other instruments and checked multiple times. I always changes the whole score to 4/4. Same when I changed the contrabasses to 8/8.
What am I doing wrong or is it a bug?

Thanks and best wishes,
Tobias

I noticed an interesting fact: If I change the position of the contrabassoon (or any other instrument) in the 3rd order (top to bottom), the individual time changes work! So this very much looks like a bug!

It seems to be an error.
But if you select the measure first and then use Ctrl + 4/4 time signature, then it works.
Dragging with Ctrl+4/4 works for all measures, but not the first one.
How did you achieve it for the English horn and bass clarinet? I have no idea!

Are you on a different OS? I'm on Windows.

There are two methods to set a local time signature:

  • Get the time signature from the palette while holding down the Ctrl key and drag it to a measure.
  • Select the measure and press Ctrl + the time signature in the palette.

The first method does not work if you choose measure no. 1 - this is a mistake. But it works with measure 2 and others.

Thanks! That was new to me!
But the whole "changing individual time signatures in a larger score" needs a fixure! I started writing notes in the score and when I change an individual instrument to 12/8 (from 4/4) other instruments change as well (although I don't want that and although the time signature is still 4/4)..... not nice

Interesting. I opened the test score and was unable to change just the contrabassoon part to 4/4.

Then I added some notes to a 12/8 measure one and a 4/4 measure one. Afterwards I was able to change any single staff to 4/4.

With MuseScore.3.7.0 and 4.5.2 Nightly. and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS I was experimenting the same problem as described when trying to add different time signatures to the individual staves. Now, I just downloaded the new patch 4.5.2 and the problem disappear. I can allocated different time signatures to every instrument without problem. The described problem apparently was really a bug!.

Just uploaded to 4.5.2 (before I had 4.5.1), but no major difference. In my score whenever I change somewhere the time signature, I have to re-confirm in any other instrument that the previous different time signature is still valid. For example in my score the English horn starts in 4/4 and every few measures the measure starts with 4/4 again, because otherwise it would be 12/8 like most of the other instruments.

Still a major bug!

It is really very seldom. I was using your score as test . I do the following:
1. I select a measure.
2. I press the key Ctrl .
3. While maintaining pressed the key Crtl. I make Click on the selected time signature. The selected time signature replaces only the old one.

I just got this problem to happen. I was going along in the OP score. Adding notes. Changing meter. Back and forth. No problem. Then I left the score window to look at the forum. when I got back to the score,,,,red squars all over the place. I don't seem to be able to fix them.

I meanwhile just continued to write notes into the score and ignoring the error messages from musescore that some measures are not correct (which is not true, but Musescore just don't get the multiple time signatures changes in some instruments). For some days that worked and I just had to say that I ignore the problems when I saved and loaded the file. But today Musescore decided that my file cannot be opened anymore. When I want to open it, the normal "there is something wrong in the file that could harm Musescore" button comes up and I chose (like everyday before) "Open it anyway". Then the file tries to open for a millisecond, but then collapses and nothing opens (but Musescore is still running and I can open other files). How can I get access to my file again. Here is the file:

I could open your score in MuseScore 3.7.0 and MuseScore 4.5.2 un Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. but it was taken about 2 secs. before it opens. MuseScore was indicating the errors, but i insisted in opening. I could save and open them again 2 times. Always the message that it was corrupted appears but i went on.
I have attached 2 of my tests just in case they can help you.

Hi!
I worked with your 3.7-file to complete the score. That worked (for reasons I don't know). Now I have proofread the score and wanted to do the corrections and guess what - the file does not open anymore on my computer. Can you please open and save it again and provide that file - hopefully that will work again (for reasons I don't know). Thanks in advance!

Best,
Tobias
