Problems with beams - Drum notation -- SOLVED
I started using MuseScore earlier this year for drum notation, and was really liking it. However with the last update (4.5.1) I started getting really weird results with beaming, none of which used to happen. A few of the side effects:
- Choosing "Reset beams" for measures in that time signature doe not reset the beams to that default pattern.
- The "Join Beams" button (formerly "Middle beam") no longer seems to work
- Rests get inserted into my score all over the place, even where a note has been placed
I finally figured out that the issue is with "voices." If I set every note to Voice 1, it's all good. I'm not sure why certain drum instruments are now set to either voice 1 or voice 2 -- I thought that in the past, they were always Voice 1 by default. But I see that I can edit the default voice for any instrument in my preferences.
Hopefully this helps someone who has been struggling with this issue.

In the past, certain drums (most of them) have always been set in Voice 1 and other drums (a few; I don't know which) in Voice 2. You have to do that in order to have different drums play simultaneously in different rhythms. (E.g., something like the kick beating 4's and the snare, syncopated quintuplet 8's)

I can believe that's true, but I'm just using a very basic kit (kick, snare, hi hat, ride), and it was not assigning voice 2 to any instruments in previous versions of the program. Not sure what changed, but it was weird because even in existing scores I had created before (which didn't have issues with some instruments set to Voice 2), when I added new measures I was getting the Voice 2 assignments as well.
In any event I'll just create a template with all Voice 1 instruments and duplicate that going forward.
Thank you very much for this solution. I was having the same issues as you and it was driving me crazy !!
