Liberamente

• May 1, 2025 - 14:27

Hello, How would I go about entering the music in the attached screenshot? I did initially think of using a different voice, but there too many notes for the bar anyway (‘the music is in 3/4). Any help/advice appreciated. Also, it’s part of a piece of flute music.

I would enter the notes as a tuplet, with 13 eighth notes in the space of one quarter. Hide the number and bracket, and resize the notes to cue size.

If you want it to sound "liberamente", you may want to change the tempo for that one beat as well. Otherwise the 13-let would take up exactly the time of one quarter note.

Put a metronome marking on the quarter note after the 13-let and set it to be the same as the tempo had been before. Then put a slower metronome marking on the first note of the 13-let. Hide them both.

Come to think of it, you could make it much closer to someone actually playing liberamente by including multiple tempo markings (and hiding them all). For example, let's say that the original tempo is 120. For the first of the 13-let, set the tempo to 105, on the fourth, 100, then the fifth 90, then on the ninth back to 105. Finally on the quarter note following, set the tempo to 120 again. This would sound more like someone playing it "freely".
