Inserting longer rests into piano sheet music

• May 2, 2025 - 20:13

I'm trying to insert longer rests in between notes in some piano sheet music for a simple made up tune and it keeps moving my notes around and even takes some out to where it messes the song up. How do I make it to where I can insert rests and not have the song messed up?

I am a beginner at the program so not too familiar with what it does, but know how to add notes. I also know some about piano so I know some notes.

Thank you!

You could use insert mode to insert rests. However, that would mean your measures would end up with more beats than indicated by the time signature. See here for how to enable insert mode https://handbook.musescore.org/basics/alternative-note-input-methods#in…

But rather than do that you could select the notes after the point where you want rests and use CTRL+X to cut them and then select the place after the "long" rests where actually want the notes and use CTRL+V to paste them there. See https://handbook.musescore.org/basics/copy-and-paste

I'm attaching it the way it is now and it's the version that doesn't say "Copy", but the one that says "Copy" on the end is the one where I add an extra rest in the first line of the song and it messed up. It's the very end of the first line where it says "Mister tree? then "I see the". I'm trying to add one more rest in between "tree" and "I. There's already one rest there, but decided it needs another one before "I see the".

Nope, you had the lyrics included correctly. Here's your Mr. Tree - Copy with an extra rest before the second line. I simply selected the notes from "see" (in "see the sky") to the end, cut them (Ctrl+X), turned the whole measure rest into three quarter rests in that measure, then pasted (Ctrl+V) onto the second quarter rest ... which pushes the entire piece farther out by one beat.

[A few moments later] And here's what I think (???) you actually wanted? Cut-and-paste as I did the other.

If cut-and-paste doesn't work, then you've likely inserted your lyrics incorrectly. Normally, if you Cut/Paste or Copy/Paste notes, their attached lyrics move with them.

However, still another method: insert whole measures, even multiple measures, at the appropriate points: Add / Measures
