The distribution of the thirty-second and quintoles over two bars

• May 4, 2025 - 19:36

The manuscript spelled out the thirty-second in one measure and the fifth is stretched over another measure. What do I need to click on or which tab to use to make this possible? I tried to do this through the Multiol tab, but this method did not help. I am attaching a screenshot.

It looks to me like the original copyist just didn't have enough room. That entire figure belongs in the measure where it starts. And, that dotted quarter on beat 3 should just be a quarter note. It's followed by the eighth, and then everything else fits into beat 4+. Either that, or its a third voice.

Or, I could be completely wrong!

I have two problems with it.

  1. I cannot put the quintuplet into the grace notes. Can you do that? How? I simply added the notes as even 16th grace notes. Perhaps the composer wanted the quintuplet to be "before" the half note F in the second measure rather than "after" the eighth note G in the first. (I tried that and still couldn't make the tuplet.)
  2. The second measure of the screenshot has five beats in the treble clef and only four in the bass. Both voices:

Voice 1 (stems up): half note F, dotted quarter Cnat, 16th note Bb, 16th note A (that's four beats there), eighth note Enat, eighth note Gb
Voice 2 (stems down): quarter note G, dotted eighth B, 16th D, dotted quarter note Ab, eighth rest (again, that's four), quarter rest.
