Score is corrupt, I don't know why. Please help

• May 7, 2025 - 16:06

I just worked on this score today in the morning, then I shut down my laptop, and now, same day in the evening, the score won't open. It's created in Version 4.4.4. Can it be repaired, or recovered? It's a song I was composing on the go, and I was happy with the progress; starting afresh would be stressful. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I don't know if the client or the MuseScore database schema caused this because this is the second time I've seen the error message, "file, ' Crucifixion For Piano And Strings.mscz ', is corrupted and cannot be opened." This is very annoying. Once you shut down your system, the message pops up when you come back to continue from where you stopped, leaving you confused and worried. That file is my school exam, Jess.

I am sorry, but both files consist only of Zeros. They cannot be repaired.
Try to find a backup copy in the folder ".mscbackup".

Edit
or look here:
Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%\MuseScore\MuseScore4
MacOS: ~/Library/Application\ Support/MuseScore/MuseScore4/.
Linux: ~/.local/share/MuseScore/MuseScore4/

chinotex104 and pauloodera: I am sorry for your lost scores. Can you both describe in detail how that happened? Did you close MuseScore or the score before you shut down the laptop? Was the score saved? When you reopened the laptop, was the message already there or did you have to load the score or start MuseScore? Anything you can provides us with could be helpful.

Hi krasko78. Yes, the score was saved, and if not, probably the little edit I did this morning is what wasn't saved yet (but I'm pretty sure I saved it). I have been working on the score for about a week, so closing it and opening it over and over, but it's only today that I encountered the error. I think what was different today is that I shut down my laptop with MuseScore still running, and the particular score open. My other scores that were not open are just fine. I always close all programs before shutting down, but today, I was in a kind of a rush; I remember shutting down the laptop with some programs still running, Musescore being one of them. I hope that's helpful. And thanks for looking into it.

Thanks for the cooperation, pauloodera. Let's try to clarify a few more things:

  1. So MuseScore was open with the score when you shut down your computer.

  2. When you shut down, do you do a real shutdown from the Start menu where all apps and Windows are closed or do you close the lid of the laptop? If you close the lid, what is it set up to when the lid is closed - hibernate, go to sleep, etc.?

  3. When you opened/started it again, did Window start with no applications, did you open MuseScore and your score and did it tell you immediately the score was corrupt? Or did everything appear they way you had left it?

  4. If everything appeared as you had left it, when did the score become corrupted? The corrution error appears when MuseScore is opening a score so you must have closed it at some point and then reopened it?

These details are really important. If you can remember and describe each step, that'd be great. So far many reports of corrupted scores seem related to people shutting down their laptops but we have not been able to reproduce it. I also close and reopen (the lid of) my laptop with all apps open all the time and have not had a score corruption.

Default behavior when closing the lid is to put the computer to sleep. Most programs won't be bothered by this. But MuseScore will most likely malfunction in some way. I have changed mine to "Do Nothing" when I close the lid. So it is like I never closed it.
For some reason it seems like many more corruptions are being reported lately.

  1. Yes, MuseScore was running when I shut down the laptop.

  2. In my case, my laptop's battery is weak, so I didn't really shut down windows, I just disconnected it from power and the whole machine went dead almost immediately

  3. When I turned the laptop on later, windows started with no programs running; when I tried opening the score that was open when the laptop "died", it returned the error message. However opening the other scores that were not open when the laptop "died", they opened just fine.

  4. I think this has been answered on point 3 above.

Unfortunately, I've already overwritten the file with the new score I created a fresh so I can't confirm if this works. But I see the folder and the file inside, I will try using it next time my score gets corrupted (though hopefully not).
