How do I…
Hi, Have a look at the attached piece of music. it’s the middle stave (right hand piano stave) that I’m having trouble with. How do I go about entering that? I’ve managed to get the lower set of notes in, but can’t seem to find a way of adding the other notes. Thank you for your j=help.

Voices?

Definitely Voices: https://handbook.musescore.org/basics/working-with-multiple-voices. Stems up in Voice 1; stems down in Voice 2.

Thank you for the replies. I’ve given it a go, but it doesn’t seem to want to do it as I would like (‘image attached). I’ve added the dotted d note, but it’s shifted the voice one notes to the right and added a bunch of rests.
I thought it was supposed to add voice 2 notes as if the voice 1 wasn’t there.
Does it matter that I’m on version 3.5?

The 3X and 4X versions behave in virtually the same way. Select the measure in the attachment to view the two Voices used.
You can keep both versions (3/4)m on the same machine, no problem.

This should not actually happen if you have not accidentally switched to "Insert" input mode.
Delete the excess rests with Ctrl+Del, but you will probably have to enter some notes again.

This is how to do it with keyboard shortcuts. (The fastest, most efficient method.)
Press N (activate note entry mode)
Press 5 . (the five character then the period; this sets the duration of the note first to quarter note, then the dot extends the duration to a dotted quarter)
Press D (enters the note)
At this point, the note will be a dotted quarter D, but it might be in the wrong octave. If so, press Ctrl+Up or Ctrl+Down to move the note up or down by octaves until it's in the correct place.
Press 4 (sets the duration to eighth note)
Press B G 0 (that's BRAVO GOLF ZERO; this enters the two eighth notes and 0 is the "note name" for a rest, another eighth)
Press . (again, the period adds an augmentation dot to the current duration, so we now expect a dotted eighth note)
Press B (enters the dotted eighth note B)
Press 3 (set duration to sixteenth note)
Press G (enters the sixteenth note G)
You have now entered Voice 1. Move the cursor back to the beginning of the measure. Moving it with Left and Right arrows will make sure you don't inadvertently enter more notes.
We suspect that this is where you made a mistake, so make sure you are in note input mode; if you are not, press N to activate it. In note input mode and with the dotted quarter note selected ...
Press Ctrl+Shift+2 (this sets the next part of entry into Voice 2)
Press 5 (sets the duration to quarter note)
Press D, then press Shift+G (enters the D+G chord)
Press R (repeats the previous chord, with the current duration)
Press 4 (sets duration to eighth note)
Press D (enters the eighth note D)
Press 5 (sets duration to quarter note)
Press D (enters the final quarter note D)
Notice that Voice 2 does not fill the measure, so MuseScore completes it by adding an eighth rest. You can hide (V) or delete (Delete) that rest if you want. Be aware that if you were in Voice 1, you would not be permitted to Delete that rest. (But you could Ctrl+Delete it, which would shorten the measure!)

Thank you for this comprehensive answer. I have given it a try, and voice 1 seems to go in okay, but when I start voice 2 it goes a bit weird. I’ve attached an image of what it looks like when I add the first D note in voice 2.

This looks like you are in "Insert" mode, rather then "input" mode. Notice the "+" sign over the end of the measure? You've added a beat to the measure. Not just a note. Keyboard entry isn't for everyone. I'm a mouser. Another way to start voice 2 is to select the measure. Hit "N". Select Voice 2 from the tool bar,

Thank you for that. I’ve finally managed to get it input, and looking correct. I managed to do it by flipping between voice 1 and 2 for each beat in the bar.

That works in some cases but definitely the hard way. :-)

That is most definitely the hard way. Your earlier thought that you should be able to add voice 2 like voice isn't there is correct.

With a little more experience, and a bit of trial and error, it has become a bit more clear. I can now do it the way described in previous responses. Thank you for all your help and advice.

This is good news.
