How do I divide parts on the same staff? I am writing a violin part, and part of it is divided as a whole note over a dotted quarter note, meant to be split in the same measure. How do I do this?

If there are different rhythms at the same place in one staff you need to use more than one voice. See https://handbook.musescore.org/basics/working-with-multiple-voices
