New version shortcomings

• May 23, 2025 - 00:46

I recently started using version 4.5.2.251141402.
I have these issues:
1st ending runs to end of line rather than selected measures.
multi-measures are either global on or off - can't be selected measures.
cannot access a Symbols menu, thereby limiting what symbols to use
Segno sign can only be at beginning or end of measure, not over a chosen note.

These are annoying, but it is still a great program!

Can you provide more detail on the first three.
There can be a way to make number four work. kind of a pain, though.

In older versions of MuseScore there was a "Z" command that allowed access to musical symbols of all kinds. Later it became a palette, now it is gone.

If I have a line of, say, 8 measures and want to make 2 of them into a 1st ending, then the first ending symbol appears over all 8, and the 2nd ending pops up randomly elsewhere on the score.

If have 8 measures of rest in one spot and one in another and two in another, I can only make them all multi rests, and not just the long one.

I forget what my fourth complaint was, but in continuing to work on the score I have found so many glitches that I want to go back to the last version. This is ridiculous.

The forth one was the inability to place a Segno symbol (repeat to) symbol over a specific note rather than a measure line. This happens in music all the time.

I don't see how I can go back two upgrades to the version of 4.5 that worked -- pretty frustrated.

  1. Not gone. View>Master palette.
  2. Can't reproduce via you instructions. Please post exact steps. I select two measures an hit the first ending icon from the lines palette and the line appears over the two measures
  3. Go to Format>Style>rests to adjust multi measure rests.
  4. True MuseScore only allows it at the beginning of a measure. For now you have to fake it.

Also, spend some time in the manual.

Thank you. Very helpful. 1.) I have been using MuseScore for many years and it is Indeed overdue time to read the manual again. I did not know where the symbols had gone. 2.) I cannot reproduce that problem with the 1st ending either, but that one score consistently fails - I dunno. It's not the program. 3.) Still can't get the the multimeasures how I want, but I see now how to work on it. Thank you, I'll figure it out. 4.) I see that the segno is limited in its use - and I can figure up a workaround. Thanks so much for the fast and friendly reply!

  1. One way. Four practice this woke best on a single staff. Though I'm pretty sure it can be extended to a score. More work, though.
Say we have a piece in 4/4 and we want the segno to appear on beat 3 of measure 3.

Place a 4/4 meter in measure 4. You'll see why in a minute.
Select a note on beat two of measure 3.
Add a bar line from the palette.
Place a 2/4 meter on the original measure 3. Now it and the next new measure are 2/4.
Select the second 2/4 measure and place the segno
Select in turn the 2/4, new bar line and the 4/4 in measure 4 and hit V.
Go to View>Show and un check Show Invisible.
Of course measure numbering is now off. So you'll need to adjust.
I just figured out how to do this all yesterday, so maybe not all the bugs are worked out. Good luck.
