Brass Instrument Muting
In a new score, I want to mute the cornet part as an echo to the F horn and later mute the horn as an echo to the cornet. When I try searching for any phrase that includes the word, 'must,' I get instructions about silencing the instrument. Please direct me to a tutorial or a place in the handbook [4] where I can learn to 'affix a straight mute' into a brass instrument.

Typo 'must' should be 'mute.'

You can edit your post
For notation purposes, "mute" and "open" are available in the Text palette. If you don't see them, look at the More menu.
For playback purposes, I don't believe that the MS Basic sounds can play a muted brass instrument (not sure?), but I may be mistaken. I believe that the MuseBrass sounds can?

Sure, MS basic trumpets play mutes. When using MS Basic, try to use a trumpet instead (it is the same soundfont anyway). For some unknown reason, this does not work with a Cornet. (but reading the instruments.xml file, it should)

Hunh! I would have sworn that I used a trumpet when I tested it yesterday. Must have used the cornet instead. The muted sound on the F horn, trombone, and tuba are truly horrible, but they're there.

There might be a faint difference on the cornet ... but there might not.

Or you can use a FX mute emulator vst3.

I changed from Cornet to Trumpet. Voila! The mute and open texts had an effect!
