Spacing of staves

• Jun 14, 2025 - 12:52

Hello, everyone!

I'm currently working on a string quartet and have some trouble with notating.
In some parts of the score I would need to divide a staff of an instrument into two staffs (just like on the 1. photo).

I can add staves, hide them if they aren't needed, I can divide the notes between staves with connected beams. But I can't get the "one staff part" vertically exactly in the middle of the "two staff part", since the spacers can be adjusted only for the entire line and I can't adjust them mid-line. The best I was able to get is on the 2. photo.

Any ideas?
Thanks very much

There may be some way of kludging the stave set up in picture 1 but...

That notation looks very odd and difficult to follow to me. The D line of the single stave section becomes an E line in the double stave section. One of the axioms if notation is that higher pitches have higher vertical placement. That is violated at the one to two stave junction. To me, your 2nd picture looks much easier to follow.

Are you trying to make an exact transcription that uses the odd looking notation? If, not I would recommend using what musescore provides to avoid confusing the player.

You're totally right,
I didn't realize that the continuous lines can be confusing when I made the quick sketch.
On the other hand, I'm using the two staff parts to notate some extended techniques where the players do not neccesarily have to read exact piches (didn't realize that either when I put the clef in the upper staff on the sketch, sorry), for example
1. violin would have:
- upper staff for right hand - col legno battuto on the nearest two open strings (or pizzicato for cello, etc.)
- lower staff for the left hand - slap on all strings etc.
these techniques will be explained in the preface and consistent for every instrument during the whole piece.
Also I figured out how to align the staves. Does that seem more clear to you? I'm thankful for any advice
