Fermatas Changing tempo

• Jun 24, 2025 - 07:49

When I added fermatas to notes it changed the tempo thereafter in the piece. I looked online but there doesn't and tried a few things but nothing works. I saw something on adjusting the time stretch, but this doesn't seem to work. If I have it on anything more than 100%, the tempo gets cut in half.

Please attach a score (.MSCZ file) that demonstrates this problem. If you don't know How To attach a file, click the link.

Also, identify your computer's operating system and version, and MuseScore's version. You can get all three simultaneously by clicking on Help / About MuseScore from the main menu. Then click the copy button (two pieces of paper) next to the "Revision" number. Paste that into your post with the score.

All of the fermatas in your sample score are set to a custom Time Stretch of 100% - click the Playback button in the Properties panel to see this property. A Time Stretch of 100% means "no change at all", because the duration of the note or rest is left as normal. By default, a new fermata added to a score is set with a Time Stretch of 200%, which means a duration twice as long as the target note or rest.

The only elements affecting playback of your sample score are the caesuras , which have the default Pause Time of 2 seconds (see Properties panel, Playback button).

I do not hear the tempo change, but I do hear the music stop completely at the caesura (as expected!) and then continue at the same tempo. If you remove the caesura, the music continues at the same tempo. If you change the Playback of the fermata, it slows the one note and then continues at the same tempo.

Sorry, I don't hear what you have described.

Have you touched the playback speed button during the score creation? https://handbook.musescore.org/sound-and-playback/playback-controls#pla…
In 4.5.2 there is a bug: change the playback speed to 50%, adjust the stretch of a fermata from 200% to 201% and readjust it back to 200%, return the playback speed back to 100%, and the playback of the score will be incorrect. It seems to be fixed in the nightly build 4.6.0.
P.S. I replied to the wrong comment. Oh, well...
