OK, listening to these it seems I need a bit of an education in how sound fonts work. When I turn up the volume high enough I can detect less pleasing component vibrations of various instuments. The closer I get to 100% on the MuseScore Play Panel the more component vibrations I can detect. I say component rather than instrument because what I mean is being able to hear the component vibrations of a violin bow rather than the harmonic viabrations of the violin strings. In the case of the violin not really but say in case of a more blunt instrument, say the Celesta, although I don't even know what one looks like I think they must be long and made out of large dried canes of bamboo or something and bluntly struck to be played. Some intruments sound good up to 80% on the Master Volume, e.g. Vibraphone. Others like the Music Box sound good only up to 65%. Finally, some, like the Yamaha Grand Piano sounds good at 100% and there is no static or popping when changing the master volume for that. However, 100% on the master volume is too loud for my ears as my computer's master volume is already 100% and I adjust apps accordingly. Also, I'm not sure how these instruments in the sound fonts is created but a Yamaha Grand Piano at typical volume should be much louder than Music Box at typical volume (that seems to be Master Volume at 50%) but when you listen to the Music Box at 50% it already seems to be playing louder than what you'd expect a music box to play at and certainly louder than it should sound relative to the Yamaha Grand Piano. I think none of you are old enough to have watched a television show 'The Bionic Woman' with Lindsay Wagoner I saw as a child but it is like the Music Box is recorded with special technical ears humans don't have and also too loudly while the Yamaha Grand Piano is recorded by human ears. Of course I know that both where recorded by man-made technology but I am trying to point out why the Yamaha Grand Piano sounds so good but the Music Box sounds loud and not much like a music box for those that have heard them (and I know 'Good Night, Ladies' is not a song without a lot of adjustments that would sound good on a music box). So using what I have discovered about so far I will play all instruments in this sound font at 65% and at 95% (column 2 and column 3). As I said earlier though technically some of that noise might be properties of the instrument. I don't know so your expertise is needed. The percents I give are approximate since the Master Volume on the Play Panel doesn't say. And also note, in this test, I am not testing changing the volume, instruments, or other such settings while the score is in the process of being played. I already know that changing the volume on some instruments makes static and popping sounds. Generally speaking I've found if it doesn't sound good at 95% than changing volume during playback seems to make a litlle bit of static pop noises, not much. And not surprising, changing an intrument to another instrument during playback sounds awful. Generally speaking I think all the NOK instruments sound as if they were recorded with a too sensitive mic. For reference sake hardware / software: ASUS EP121 Intel i5 U470 Intel Graphics HD 4 GB RAM Realtek Audio High Definition Audio Device (the HDMI port from my PC to my monitor) OS - Windows 8.1 64 bit Realtek Audio - Realtek High Definition Audio (Realtek 10/10/12 version 6.0.1.6220) High Definition Audio - High Definition Audio Device (Microsoft 13/08/22 6.3.96000.16384) And my listening setup is this: an HDMI cable from Tablet PC to monitor and a $5 pair of Panasonic earbuds plugged into the monitor. I've order a pair of $14 Logitech speakers to plug into the monitor but they haven't arrived yet. So on with the actual sound font now. Sound Font vol vol Location MuseScore 2.0 Default 65% 95% Measure Yamaha Grand Piano - OK OK Bright Yamaha Grand - OK OK Electric Piano - OK NOK Measure 7 Honky Tonk - OK OK Rhodes EP - OK NOK Entire Generation of distortion overtake harmonics Legend EP 2 - OK NOK Multiple Harpsicord - OK OK Clavient - OK OK I think, sounds like electic current when strings are struck vibrating secondary harmonic devices Celesta - OK NOK Measure 7, 11 Glockenspiel - OK NOK Entire but problem sounds sound like bell sounds so maybe OK. Problematic, a design desision - loud, e.g. Munich's, but you generally only hear in the distance. If you were up in the City Hall clock listening it would be too loud and maybe similar too this at high volumes. Music Box - OK NOK Noise at high volumes sounds electric in nature and not mechanical as you'd expect from a music box. Until volume on Play Panel exceeds 65% and then one begins to hear what sounds like windows and furniture rattling. Vibraphone - OK At about 65% Master Volume or less. At higher volumes it seemed like I could hear the striking vibrations too much and not the harmonic vibrations. Also, there was static popping noising only hearable when changing volume. Finally, I somehow managed to cause MuseScore to get stuck at the 1st note in the score when I tried to replay the score. It took several attempts until MuseScore would play the entire score again.
