Error when I double click MuseScore music composition file

• Jul 3, 2011 - 12:39

MuseScore v1.0 r 3996 JP version

I created a short music composition (3KB size) in Windows Vista SP2.

With a different machine (Windows XP) when I double clicked that music composition, I get the following error message:

"”Error reading file P06DFB~1.MSC at line 1 Column 1: error occurred while parsing element"

However when I first open MuseScore program (Windows XP), click on file, open and select that same music composition file, it opens properly. Using Windows Vista machine, there is no problem.

On my Windows XP machine, I have unistalled MuseScore and re-installed and tried double clicking the same file, but I get the same error.

I have selected other music composition using XP machine, but I still get the same error message.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can open my music composition by simply double clicking the file?

It is just a wild shot but, looking at the file name in the error message, with double click, XP sends to the programme the SHORT file name (8+3), rather than the LONG name (which should have either .MSCX or .MSCZ extension).

.MSC is not (or no longer) a valid extension for MuseScore file, it is rather the extension for MS Console (A system application). Chances are that, by double clicking, because of the short extension (.MSC), either:

1) MSC is launched rather than MuseScore

or

2) MuseScore is launched but the ambiguity between .MSCZ and .MSCX makes it to fail.

Thank you for your comments.

My music composition files do indeed have the correct extension of .MSCZ.

I also do have other files with .MSCZ, (with comma at the end) however result is the sames with these also.

Since problem does not occurr using Windows vista, this most likely could be a bug.

I don't see how this is an MuseScore problem. My suspicion is with Windows XP because the OS is the one that sends the filename to the associated app. You should check your file associations for MSCZ and MSCX and make sure they are associated with MS. Why XP is sending the shortname instead of the longname is a mystery.

Miwarre: if MSC was opening MS's files, that's not the error you would see.

Snoma01: Can you post a screen capture of the error window?

Files with the comma at the end are backup files: they have the same type of contents as main files and therefore will be accepted (or rejected) as them.

"Since problem does not occurr using Windows vista, this most likely could be a bug."

I beg to disagree: since the problem only occurs with XP, it is most likely a problem with XP, rather than with MuseScore.

I have two XP computers with MuseScore installed and with both, double clicking the file name -- either .MSCX or .MSCZ -- in Windows Explorer, results in MuseScore being launched and the file correctly loaded and displayed, also the full long name is shown in MuseScore window title.

Chances are this has to do with some configuration of your XP installation.

EDIT: I just saw the screen shot. Your XP is Japanese; I suspect this to be the source of the issue. Unfortunately, I know very little of non-Latin Windows versions; Windows is supposed to work with Unicode internally and this should not matter, but XP has some limitations. Try searching the forum for keywords like "Japanese" or "Chinese" or any other non-Latin language: maybe some other user already met this issue and found a way out of it.
