The part title is set in stone after it's been created. You can delete the part and create a new one with a new name, if you want.

That would be... a lot of work. Well, I can copy it. Also, saving parts appears to change the title to whatever you save it as.
Seems like it would be much cleaner to edit the part name, though.

Seems your reviving a lot of old feature requests: #10728: Add ability to rename part titles after creation ;-)
In reply to Seems your reviving a lot of by Isaac Weiss
lol, I keep googling, but it doesn't always get results. And maybe adding another voice to old feature requests means it'll get done? Lol. The Score+parts thing is apparently new. And I want to request system text be aligned according to voice - second voice system text default under the staff. That one is pretty minor, though.
I'm like 90% certain getting an accel/rit. that works like a crescendo/decrescendo line, but with tempo, is also an already requested feature. You're all working on a clarinet soundfont, and it doesn't bother me much anyway, 'cause I can use my own. Timbres of Heaven is better than Fluid on all counts, though.
I can't think of anything else right this instant - maybe a thing where you can play another video/audio source simultaneously with the score(like videoscore on the website) as that would help transcribers a lot.
That's it for now, lol. I think some of these don't come up with the Bach project because it's Baroque, and has very different demands from something like the Rite of Spring or Symphonie Fantastique - both of which are public domain, but have major errors on IMSLP - and both of which are Romantic/Modern(thick notation) for massive orchestras.
I have half a mind to attempt these projects on the nightly builds. Be all you can be, Musescore. :-D
:-P

To be clear, you can change the part titles immediately after creating parts. It's ony if you press OK and thereby accept the default titles that you cannot change them. And yes, of course, this is something that it would be nice to address at some point. But still,. as long as you do the change right away, it's fine.

It seems that's a rather perplexing issue—about two and half developers looked at it and couldn't solve it.

Curious; I would think it would be pretty straightforward. But indeed, more than the one line the PR proposed changing in the code for the dialog itself.

Well, I don't know anything about anything. But I observe that awelch83 assigned and then unassigned himself, as later did salil K, and in between vgStef left a comment (that's the "half"). Would you care to... (hint, hint) ;-)

We'll see. I've been busy with a number of other things lately and haven't been contributing much in the way of code, but I do of course intend to get back into it when I can. But I'd go so far as to suggest that this might make a good first fix for someone with some programming background looking to get involved with MuseScore - I really doubt it would be more than a dozen lines.

I want to volunteer, but I'm going to be very busy going from sightreading to performance from tomorrow to Sunday, so I don't have the time right this instant.
It's not the lines of code to be written that's daunting, btw. It's the lines of code already written. This is the biggest project I've ever wanted to contribute to, and it doesn't appear to have an API.

We'd be super happy to have you contribute when you have the time! As mentioned, I'm not really a programmer, but one thing I guess worth mentioning is that what's called "parts" in the UI is "excerpts" in the code. So, https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=excerpt.
You may also want to glance over https://musescore.org/en/development.

Understood. One nice thing about this aprticular change is that, if I'm right, the change would be localized enough that you really don't need to understand much about MuseScore internals to make the change. And there are plenty of people here and on IRC to help.

Well, not cast in stone, maybe in mud... ;-)
You can save as mscx or extract the msccx from the mscx, hand-edit the mscx with a plain text editor and to do the rename there.
Not for the faint-harted, but possible
If I delete the mis-named part and re-create it , do I lose all the articulations, dynamics etc . that I put into it?
All the small details that needed to be fixed when going from score to part initially?
Thanks.

The articulations and dynamics will still be there, they will be in their default locations if you moved them. You can extract the same part under the correct name to see what it will look like, then delete the one you don't want when you are done.
Also, if you want to just double click the name on the part's score you can edit it. The name of the tab will not be seen by anyone.
