Version 1.1 painfully slow to start up

• Aug 22, 2011 - 16:46

I've just uninstalled version 1.1 and reinstalled 1.0. It takes all morning for version 1.1 to get to the point I can use it, whereas version 1.0 starts up almost instantaneously.

I would guess the problem may relate to MuseScore Connect, which would try to establish an Internet connection on startup. That's usally perfectly fast, and even if there is no Internet connection at all, it normally seems to give up immediaely so startup time isn't obviously worse. At least, that's how it seems to work for me. But it wouldn't surprise me if some unusual situation could lead to slow startup on account of Connect. Try turning it off via Edit->Preferences and restarting to see if that fixes it. I guess you could also turn off the check for updates, too.

I just tried MuseScore 1.1 on Windows 7 64 bits. Installed with all settings by default (meaning in C:\Program Files (x86)). It starts very fast and run perfectly. There must be something else. Is your internet connection slow ?

OK, I uninstalled MuseScore1.0, reinstalled 1.1 and disabled Connect in the preferences. Now 1.1 starts just as swiftly as 1.0. I have no idea what led to my original experience of the slow start, since disabling Connect didn't help before.

As a general comment I find if I use the program for any length of time a lot of strange behaviours start to creep in. It's one of those pieces of software that benefits from frequent closures and restarts.

Sure: but intermittent problems are usually the most tricky to fix.
One concerned colours. I'd been struggling (and largely failing) to increase numbers of systems per page without miniaturizing the notes too far. Had made loads of changes to spacing in the layout and style menus and decided I'd revert to default. Opened preferences, hit 'Reset to default'. Canvas colour changed to the rather ugly default yellow-brown backgroundbut now all the ledger lines and notes were white. Beams and clefs were black, so were the lyrics. I could find no place for customizing note colours, so closed and restarted the program: everything went back to normal.
A second thing I've noticed is that, after a period of use, random notes, possibly those with ties, appear greayed out on the screen — the look of notes that have been set invisible. I ignored these and indeed they both printed normally and appeared normally once I restarted the program.
Lyrics (in my opinion the real Achilles heel of MuseScore, by the way) sometimes and apprently at random turn the blue colour of selected lyrics even though they're not selected. This is not because they're associated to other lyrics that have been selected. They remain blue even when notes in another part of the score are selected.
Concerning lyrics (but this is surely a well known bug), if you cut and paste a selection of music containing lyrics, the paste works fine, but some lyrics (mostly but not only ones at the start of each bar) still remain at the point where the selection was cut.
Hope this helps answer your question. I do sincerely appreciate what MuseScore offers!
