classical guitar sound when using playback

• Dec 24, 2011 - 12:08

Hello,
As a classical guitar player I am using the standard sound font which comes with
the download of the MuseScore program (selecting the create-instruments-Guitar.
When using playback, I am very unsatisfied with the sound of the classical Guitar.
Searching for the internet for a sound font which produces a better sound did not give
any results.
Is there someone on this Forum who can help me with a tip?
Joe.

For better classical guitar sound, I would first suggest setting both reverb and chorus to zero in the mixer window. I have also searched for a good classical guitar soundfont and the best I have encountered so far is a commerical one from http://jensensamples.com/ -- it's called "Classical Guitar - SoundFont, Kontakt and EXS24" In my opinion it is well worth $9.95 it sells for. One other tweak I discovered with this soundfont is that velocity 80 (default in my MS scores) results in much too hard of pluck, but a value around 60 sounds much better to my ear. One last issue that I haven't yet solved yet is convincing MS to let more of the guitar notes ring.

You would load the recorded samples into a SoundFont editor to create a new one.

This is definitely a non-trivial exercise, but if you want to explore it further I would download Viena and see if you can make any sense of it (assuming you're working on the Windows platform)

There are other SoundFont editors about for Linux and Mac, some free, some not.

Your best bet would be to do a Google search for Soundfont creation and see what springs out of the woodwork :)

Perhaps this would be a good subforum? Soundfont creation for MuseScore?? Particularly as 2.0 will support multiple Soundfonts at once. If you don't want to do it here I'm prepared to set up a blog for it at my webspace with WordPress, but not until next year :)
