If you combine the two things, it can cause collisions, and make the notation look uneven.

Therefore, the algorithm to draw both splines should be the same.

There might be similar algorithms, but my understanding is that they are not supposed to look identical. If nothing else, the conventions involving where they attach differs. But sure, it wouldbe nice if slurs were automatically drawn in such a way as to avoid collisions.

A lot has happened in seven years, so I thought I'd update this issue with a score.

  1. Open attached score (produced in 2.3.2).

Result: Slur collides with the tie.

Currently, autoplace for slurs looks only at segment shapes, and thus it misses things like ties. That is indeed a potential area for improvement.
