Call for the first MuseScore hangout

• Aug 23, 2012 - 09:59

Two weeks ago lasconic and myself were interviewed by The Audio Podcast via a Google Hangout. The interview was aired streamed live on Google+ and the recording is available on YouTube. A hangout is a Google Plus feature which lets you video chat with up to ten people simultaneously. It also comes with apps such as screen sharing, google docs integration and many more apps.

Having liked the interview and the way a hangout works, we would like to run an experiment with the MuseScore community. We'd like to run a public MuseScore hangout ourselves and talk about MuseScore 2.0. There is a lot on the 2.0 roadmap which still needs a lot of discussion and testing. One hangout feature that will definitely be very useful is screen sharing, which will permit us to show MuseScore 2.0 and talk through some design issues, implementation decisions, try reproducing bugs and so forth.

So the aim for this very first MuseScore hangout would be to further elaborate the 2.0 roadmap, identify open issues, do some live testing and bug reporting, write some docs and so forth.

Let us know if you like to join and what day as of next week and time would be best for you. Lasconic and myself are in UTC+2 timezone.

In order to join the hangout or follow the live stream, follow MuseScore on Google+.

I'll surely like to join! But I've no web cam (if a photo camera can steal your soul, what a video camera could do? <g>): is it a problem?

(In case, I'm UTC+2 too. No particular day or time preference: I'm quite flexible in my schedule).

M.

I would be interested in this.

I am in the GMT timezone (UTC 000) so not badly out with you guys.

Thursday evenings are bad for me (choir practice) and Sunday mornings.

But apart from that I can be pretty flexible.

I've just linked up with the MuseScore circle on Google+

Regards
Michael

Just so you know, I had a meeting that was originally scheduled for noon my time (18:00 Paris time) but it just got moved forward an hour. So I'm not sure how long you were planning on hanging, but I'll only be able to participate for around 45 minutes, unfortunately.

EDIT: I am timezone-challenged. The Doodle link led me to believe we were talking about 10-12 my time, but I guess it's actually 8-10, in which case, I'm cool. At least, now that I've had a cup of coffee and had time to think about it, I'm pretty sure 8:00 really is the correct time for me (MDT - Denver).

But if the Doodle was lying to me about time, I suspect it might be lying to others too?

Here is the recording of the very first MuseScore hangout on air. You'll see from left to right: Marc Sabatella, Michael Cowgill, Nicolas Froment and myself Thomas Bonte. Here is what we talked about:

  • 0m20s: how we shall write the handbook for MuseScore 2.0
  • 7m30s: talking about the new design for 2.0
  • 18m30s: talking about the new design for musescore.org
  • 27m50s: some discussion about the Sibelius story
  • 36m10s: a chat about sheet music on mobile

You can follow the links & screenshots we talked about in the Hangout notes.

As it was the first time I ever did a hangout on air, I made a few mistakes. So here are the lessons learned:

  • I missed the 'start the broadcast' button at the top (due to small laptop screen) so the first hour of the hangout didn't get recorded. Oops :(
  • You'll see that we are often talking about something that we see on our screens, but you don't see it. Next time, we'll use the screen share feature more consequently.

As we are closing in on the 1st alpha release of MuseScore 2.0, we'll probably have a hangout on air every X weeks, focusing each time one a few new 2.0 features, talk through outstanding bugs, design issues and other challenges.
