How do I create harp placing brackets?
Greetings.
Placing brackets tell a harpist where to put their fingers so as to play the next two to four notes. It looks like a "[" bracket, rotated 90 degrees, over (or under) the notes, with fingerings attached. I get the impression that they are primarily used by beginners.
Here is a blog article with music to practice that talks about the brackets:
http://www.celticharper.com/harpblog/?p=7
Here are a couple of sheet music snippets showing the brackets.

Can I make them in MuseScore, and if so, how?
Thanks!

Use a single line of the palette "Lines".
Click on the line and in the "Line properties"" check "hook" at the beginning and the end. The positive value adjust the length of the hook downwards and negative upwards..
To orient line double click it "handles" appear and can be moved with the up and down keys ( only = 1 space, + Ctrl = 1/10 space or + Alt = 1/100 space ( this is valid for all the elements you want to move )) . You can also move the "handles" with the mouse.

Fabulous! Works like a charm.
Thank you,

Hi, this trick doesn't seem to work with musescore 2.0. Any clues as to how we can make fingering brackets on 2.0?

It should work in a similar fashion. Can you explain where you are blocked?

You can do it with the 2.0 of course.
So:
1) Add the simple line (Lines palette)
2) Right-click -> Line properties
3) Tick "Hook" twice "Begin" and "End", with the values you wish, 0.50 sp, or 1.00 etc.-> Ok
First result:
4) Now, in Inspector: Tick "Allow diagonal"
5) For edition, double-tick on the line for the placement you prefer with the handles
Final result:
Of course, it's recommanded then to place this new line in the palette for reuse.
EDIT: and if you want the inverse result for the hooks: choose in Line properties negative values for these hooks: -0,50 sp or -1.00 sp and so on.

Wow, thank you for such a quick response! I was having trouble looking for "line properties". Thanks to your explanation now my music has harp fingerings!

Hi! I'm using MuseScore 3, and as soon as I shift the line diagonally the hooks are messed up or missing entirely.
Before...
After just moving the right handle up...
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm, I just tried and found the same. Looks like a bug involving hooks on diagonal lines. Can you submit an official bug report using the Issue Tracker (see Support menu above, or Help / Report a Bug from within MuseScore)? Set "Severity" to "Major". Include a sample score.

I do this with MuseScore 2 but can't find a way in MuseScore 3. I get the line onto the music, then right click on it and the menu does not have a Line Properties choice. It only has Edit Element which has no chance to add hooks. Ideas? Thanks!

In MuseScore 3 this is now also found in the Inspector.

Thank you! I did put the hooks on. then when I went to change the position (they can't be horizontal, they have to be at a tilt over the notes corresponding to the notes going downwards or upwards), the hooks disappeared and a long line appeared on the line.

oops to be clearer than the last email, the entire harp "finger placing" bracket is what has to tilt, not the hooks themselves.

It's not clear if that means you've figured it out or not. If not, please attach your score so we can understand and assist better.

This is what happens when I try to tilt it - hooks disappear and a long line appears going up at an angle.

I'm guessing you aren't using 3.1, then, since the bug mentioned above was fixed already. If you still see this in 3.1, please attach your actual score, not just a picture, so we can see what is actually going on.

HI Marc,
SUCCESS! After I upgraded to 3.1 it works! Fabulous.
Next question: I am trying to change the font for the tempo marks. I go to format>style>text style>tempo. I choose my text style and press ok. It does not change. I go back to change it and it says the name of the style I chose but that is still not the font actually on my page. Pointers?

Again, it's really hard to help from just a picture - we really need the actual score. My guess though is that you previously applied custom formatting to this tempo element, telling MuseScore not to honor the text style.

Yes, as I said, there is custom formatting applied - looks like at some point you forced it to be FreeSerif using the text toolbar. Just select your tempo texts and click the Remove Custom Formatting button in the Inspector to make them respond to the style defaults again.

pressing return toggles line breaks.
How can you do this on version 3? I can't find the regular horizontal line. Thank you so much!

It's on the Lines palette. If you don't see it, be sure you are in the Advanced workspace instead of the default Basic (see control at top right).

I am using Musescore 4.2.1.xxxx and I cannot find any way to add hooks to lines. I have followed these instructions as well as others and I don't see any hooks on the "Line Properties" page. Has anyone determined how this works in Musescore 4.2.1.xxxx?

Just select the line and look in the appearance tab and you should see this:
