Lyrics copy and paste. Insert Lyrics line.

• Mar 11, 2013 - 15:57

Hi all,
when I write a SATB score from old ones, the main problem that I have is writing the text of lyrics, so that I prefer to complete the soprano part with all the lyrics and the copy it to the other parts, even if I cold copy the correct notes of them.
I hope the coming version may be easier by this side.
To add a new line of text between two other lines already written (I have made 1 and 2, now I want to add another line that will become a new 2 while the old one becomes 3), is an headache for me.
Thanks.

Prepare lines of text with word processing program, example two lines;
The first copy (ctrl + c);
Positions below the first note, then ctrl + v;
hold ctrl and every time you press v get a a syllable pasted;
Repeat these steps for the second line ecc.
When you write the text you just have use "space" for each syllable.
Keep in mind that many texts you can find them on the net, then you just hyphenate

I've tryied but tle lines "-" aren't converted correctly, I think they are thought as part of the syllabe. Take a look at the image, the Soprano has been made as said on the link you gived before, the Mezzosoprano with just spaces and I have added the syllabation lines; ok it's better than nothing ...
Is it possible to copy the whole text from a voice?

Does this give you the result you want?

Create a score with four "instruments" ( one stave each for S, A, T and B).
Enter the soprano notes in the first stave.
Enter the soprano lyrics in the first stave.
Copy the whole first stave.
Paste to the second stave (Alto part)
Right-click on a note in the Alto part and choose Select -> All Similar elements in Same Stave
Press the [Del] key

This should delete the notes but leave the lyrics.
Now click on the first rest in the Alto part and enter the notes for the Alto part.

Repeat for Tenor and Bass.

I find that if I delete the notes and then enter the correct ones using the keyboard it is much faster than pushing existing notes up and down with the arrow keys (think "up, up, up, up, up" versus "c") or using the mouse to enter new notes. Your mileage may vary, as they say.

A fair amount of most SATB pieces (hymns etc,) share rhythm for a large percentage of the piece. Where the rhythm differs (say you have crotchets on the Soprano part and a few quavers in the Alto part) then it doesn't affect the lyrics by entering the new notes except to the extent that you may need at the end to go back and embellish the lyrics with ties, hyphens, melismas etc. for the parts with different rhythms. Still, for the majority of the piece the job is straightforward.

Maybe it's a bug, maybe it's a feature of XML, maybe it's just a happy accident but so long as the lyrics are "anchored" to some real note then what you do to notes in the other staves doesn't affect them much. The main thing is that the original rhythm pattern exists somewhere within the staves e.g. if you were to change all the first two beats from crotchets to minims then you would have disrupted the pattern, the second syllable would have no note to anchor to and it would, effectively, disappear (the XML entry would have gone completely for that second note along with its lyric as the next note is now the second note as XML is read sequentially). The above trick won't work for all pieces but for many SATB pieces (where there is a large amount of shared rhythm) it will.
