Note: Page 92 of 'Behind Bars' has an example of how it should be presented and states before it: "Sharps: the edges of the crossbars align vertically but do not overlap:"

For once, I would politely disagree with Elaine. Lilypond uses the same layout than MuseScore, and the same font. In Sibelius and Finale, the sharps "horizontal" lines are shorter and so it makes sense to space them differently.

I also disagree with Ms. Gould (twice now; I'm starting to rejoice I didn't spend 70$ on that book...).

The example in #5 from her book is clearly too crowded, but the examples from Sibelius and Finale are too 'sparse' (as well as the Gould example in #4 which usse a font very similar to Sibelius'). MuseScore is for me in the 'golden middle'.

As lasconic noted, I also think (par of) the difference is in the shape of the symbols; Sib / Fin sharps have vertical bars more wide apart than in MuseScore font (rather than horizontal bars shorter; incidentally, IMO MuseScore font is better under this respect, as well as in many other) and the horiz. bars are thicker.

Anyway the horiz. bars extend less out of the vert. bars but more 'bulkily'. This may explain why Sib / Fi need to space sharps a little more (to avoid vert. bars too near); however, they exceed too much.

For what is worth, I do not think there is anything to fix in #1 and I hope the fix in #2 didn't actually change anything!

Thanks,

M.

Werner changed it back (link ), but may have forgot to mention it here.

Even before looking at the book, I wasn't keen on the spacing of the sharps, but I am overruled, so okay :).
