Plugins in general don't work well or not at all in MuseScore 3 currently.
For the notenames plugin though there's some cure; named noteheads, as a staff property.
it has occurred to me that this may be a bug report for the 3.0 beta. sorry, i was trying to get notenames to work in 2.3.2, in which they also do not appear to work.
yes, i did try selecting everything and when i tried the plugin nothing happened. so, i tried the 3.0 beta, and although it is pretty crashy i did get the noteheads names to mostly work- see image
Perhaps the SMuFL folks would be willing to define these as part of the standard and add them to Bravura font. Meanwhile we should probably consider automatically mapping them to the enharmonic equivalents.
Another interesting idea is to label the names of all the notes when they're in various shapes because it's pretty easy to fit a note name into a note head of any shape.
I have a request to add the Double Sharp & Double Flat Named note heads (as well as all the various accidentals) cause things will get more interesting this way

that does not seem to be an option in staff properties. can you please provide more details as to how to do this workaround?

In staff properties thee is an Advanced Style Properties button, click it and then chose The appropriate Notehead scheme.

The notehead scheme in advanced style is a new feature in MuseScore 3.0, it isn't available in MuseScore 2.3.2.
But the plugin does work for 2.3.2. What specifically goes wrong when you try? Did you make a selection first?

I guess there is no named notehead for double sharp and double flat

What is the workaround
What is it a regression against?
The workaround would be to make it a new upgrade for MuseScore 4 (this should be applied to note heads of every shape)

You have a dream/wish, you do not have a workaround.
Maybe if we updated the Named Note Head Features to include the Double Sharp & Flat Symbols (and various other Accidentals too), that'll help.
We can't change SMuFL, and that doesn't have these noteheads (yet)
Request it there first.

We could also implement that into the Double note Heads as well as all the various shaped note heads for more flexibility.
Pointer to the SMuFL issue please
It is not a 4.x issue nor a regression
