How to number repeated measures?

It's also very common with your standard % repeated bar notation, or long held notes. Basically anytime a part is going to make a performer's eyes cross, there's numbers so they can easily count to when they need to move again - almost like resting.

I use staff text for this and manually adjust the position. Ideally there would be a way to center over a measure. I just realized there is a way, although it's a total accidental that is works: add a repeat text (Fine, etc) and then set the alignment to Center. This works because repeat text, unlike other text, is attached to the measure, not any specific note in it. Suggesting it should be pretty easy to add a new text type that worked the same way but without any special playback semantics. Meanwhile, if you can make it work without bad playback effects, it's something worth trying.
