MIDI input illogical? Or am I doing something wrong?

Well the MIDI is plugged in and it enters notes fine, but when i want to play a different length note (e.g. playing from quaver to semi quaver) i have to point and click or use the 1-9 keys. Is there any way to play the song straight through after putting in the proper time signature and key signature?
