Change note values after typing them in

So, I want to change the duration of the selected note and the note afterwards, so that the second one is a dotted quarter note and the first one a quarter note (without re-entering anything). However when I change the first one to be a quarter note, I get a pause between the notes. When I then put a dot after the second one the third note just dissapears. What could I do?
