It's worth reconsidering the default values for the various relevant style settings. But meanwhile, if you prefer your broken beams to be shorter, got to Format / Style / Beams and change the minimum length setting there. or if you want to ensure a larger minimum space between notes, increase that setting in Formaty / Style / Measure, or perhaps increase the overall spacing there.
Gould says these should be the length of a notehead, btw. Ours do appear to be slightly larger, depending on which music notation font you are using.
