How do I change the instrument used for playback in Musescore 4?

• Aug 31, 2023 - 09:41

I'm using Musescore to practice my parts in a choir. The default sound for voice instruments is the terribly annoying Aah-sound, and I want it to just use regular piano sound, which is also the sound I'm used to hearing during choir practices.

In Musescore 2 and 3, I could easily swap the sound used for playback via the Mixer panel, but I cannot find this ability in Musescore 4. There is a Sound-dropdown, but it doesn't allow me to really select anything at all:

Unlike in Musescore 3, where there also is a Sound-dropdown which does allow me to select from every possible instrument sound, including the piano:

Is changing the sound for an instrument no longer possible in Musescore 4, or is it done a different place or what?

Bumping this question for visibility - I'm also trying to use something other than the Choir Aahs sound for playback of choral parts, and this doesn't seem possible in MS4.

I've seen a suggestion that the "Sound" dropdown in the MS4 mixer would allow this, but for me that dropdown only shows "MS Basic" and "SoundFonts" > "MS Basic".

This is with MuseScore 4.1.1-232071203.

For soundfonts that represent collections of sounds, manual selection of individual sounds within a given soundfont is currently not supported (as of Musescore 4.0).
However...
To allow for selection of different instrument sounds, you can download the MS Basic.zip found here:
https://community.masteringmusescore.com/c/resources/ms-basic-individua…

This will allow swapping of instrument sounds without changing the instrument(s) in the score itself.
