Cannot download MuseScore 4

• Dec 27, 2023 - 03:09

Hello! I am a long-time MuseScore user (started with MuseScore 2). I have the latest supported version of MuseScore 3 (which works fine), and I did download and start to use MuseScore 4 when it was initially released. However, I didn't do much with it, as I had to create a lot of scores in a hurry, and didn't have the time to learn how to use MS4 correctly. I have the paid membership to MuseScore.

My problem is that I am trying now to download the latest release of MS4, and it simply will not work. I have tried downloading both via the Hub, and without it. The app is installed on my PC, but it seems like just the shell of the program is there - it will not open. I get messages that it is loading, and the icon appears on my toolbar, but that's it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and cold rebooting, several times (over a period of a few weeks), and I cannot get it to open. Even trying to open a file using MS4 leads to the same problem.

About the time the problem started, I had suddenly lost MS3 (don't know how that happened, possibly a Microsoft update), and had to reinstall that - which fortunately worked.

I use Windows 10 (bc I don't like Windows 11), but I don't think that would be the problem.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do to get it to actually work?

Windows version or paid membership make zero difference. Uninstall never works because of files left behind.
Consider running a search of your hard drive for "musescore4" and deleting anything that is found. Then restart your computer and try to download (but don't install, yet) MU4 without the HUB. After the download restart your system again. Then install MU4.

Thank you! I did as you suggested, and found quite a few files (despite having uninstalled several times). And now it works :-)

I haven't downloaded MuseHub yet, but will do that shortly.

Your assistance is much appreciated!
