musescore (both 4 and 3) no longer has a working transport mechanism, and even the musescore videos don't have sound

I recently tried to 'upgrade' from Musescore 3 to Musescore 4. Since that time, I've had no access to the transport controls most of the time, and even when I do, hitting 'play' does nothing. It also turns out that even the musescore help videos are no longer producing sound.

This can happen if you are using an external audio device. Disconnect it or set it up to work with MU4. There is a HOW TO in the support section on how to proceed.

Tried that. No effect. Specifically, there appears to be two separate problems. 1) When I click the 'play' icon, the blue bar indicating start of play appears, but the transport never activates. That is, it never starts playing even though the 'play' icon has switched to the 'pause' icon. Clicking it again removes the blue bar, but it never seems to try and start the play after being initiated. 2) When I try to listen to the MuseScore videos, the video plays but, again, there is no sound associated with the video. (I tried playing some stuff recorded on Cakewalk and that still seems to work just fine. Also, normal playback from the web works just fine. It appears to be only MuseScore that won't play audio.

Gotta say, a music notation program that won't play audio strikes me as being somewhat useless. What can be causing this insistence upon remaining mute?

Did you look into the How To about turning off exclusive mode?

Also, if you change audio output devices while MU4 is open, playback won't work. That means if you have MU4 open and plug in or unplug headphones, playback won't work. Close MU4 then plug or unplug. Reopen.

'exclusive' search finds no results. so No, I haven't seen where it is, much less how to turn it off. The headphone thing could have caused it, but I've turned MU4 off and on several times and so far still no sound out of MU videos and 'play' still won't start (note that the blue score position bar becomes visible but it does not move)

"no longer" working but 3 used to? So, something has changed on your system or in your settings. What was your previous setup (hardware, OS, Musescore version, MS sound and I/o settings) and what are the corresponding values for your current setup?

MU 3 was working until I installed MU4. Then they both stopped working, so it's a global setting somewhere. And I uninstalled MU3 thinking MU might be one of those apps that can't have multiple versions installed (since MU3 had stopped working, I saw no reason not to go with MU4 as my sole instance). And since it didn't work any longer, I have no comparison to all the hidden variable settings that might be cause this. It's GOT to be something pretty basic. I just can't find it.
