Default Custom Style
The question is as follows: can I save the custom style settings for the score so that they are automatically (by default) applied to all scores in the future (that is, so that I do not have to re-adjust the style for each opened score every time)?

Save a style file with the desired style settings in the "Styles" folder (Format -> Save Style...)
Go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Score" and enter the path to this file in the "Style:" section. However, this mainly applies to the text styles. When you create a new score, these styles will be used.
EDIT: You can also load this style file to adapt older scores to the new style.
If you want to have a score setup (your preferred instruments and their order in the score including the text styles), then save a sample file (one measure is enough) in the "Templates" folder and select it from the "Custom Templates" section the next time you create a new score.

Another path is "Format->Load style . . ."
My understanding is that "style" files (.mss) save parameters such as music and text font preferences, but not layout parameters such as staff scaling and margin--those have to be reset each time. HOWEVER, I have been in the process of converting all of my old Ms3 files to Ms4 ones, and establishing a uniform style throughout; and I have found that loading a .mss file does alter the margins, but sometimes get the page size wrong--still best to check Layout each time.
