Problems in creating a beam

• Nov 20, 2014 - 13:37

I would like to create a beam between two quavers but seem to have problems trying to achieve this.

First scenario: Using 3/4 time I want a dotted crotchet to be followed by 3 beamed quavers. The dotted crotchet is fine. Then the system (auto?) creates a single stem quaver followed by two beamed quavers. I want to created a beam between the single stem and the two already beamed quavers ? Possible?

Second scenario: Again in 3/4 time. I create a crotchet, then 4 quavers. The quavers are beamed in pairs (auto) but I want to join up the pairs to have 4 beamed quavers. Possible?

I have read the manual and tried (I) dragging from the pallet (2) highlighting note and double clicking in the beam pallet as instructed. Nothing happens. Is there a trick to this?

I would appreciate hearing if this is (a) possible and (b) step by step how to achieve? Thanks

Comments

(a) yes it's possible.

(b)
1/ Click on the first quaver notehead, double click "continue beam" in the beam palette.
2/ Click the 3rd quaver notehead, double click "continue beam" in the beam palette.
(Tested in 1.3 on macosx)

Thanks.

I was struggling with your reply as, in my comment, I had provided two scenarios and did not know precisely which one you were addressing in your step by step answer above. Also my palette does not have a 'continue beam' as you mention - it does have however, a 'start beam', a 'middle of beam', a ''no beam' and an 'auto'.

In assuming you were addressing the first scenario, I ended up with three quavers with single stems!

Having said that, by trial and error, and going by your advice to always make sure two clicks are performed, I have managed to resolve both scenarios. i.e. Three joined up quavers in the first example and four joined up quavers in the second example.

So thank you.

My advice to others is to make sure the operation is done in two clicks having (in turn) highlighted the necessary notes. And I would point out that the Handbook does not say so clearly - which is part of the confusion!

My advice is to create keyboard shortcuts for these. I have the top left key on my keyboard (below [Esc]) set as "Beam Start" and the bottom left key ( \ ) set as "Beam middle". You can then adjust beaming by using the arrow keys to move between notes and the shortcuts to set start and middle (continuing) beams.

FWIW, we just made some changes to the default beaming in 2.0 nightly builds - some changes made by lasconic a week or two ago, another made by me just a couple of days ago. I'm hoping to be able to get away without bothering to define a shortcut for the beam property icons - I think the cases I was finding myself having to correct most often should now be better. Mostly cases involving mixing eighths with eighther triplets or sixteenths. So folks running the nightly builds, feel free to provide feedback.

The specific beaming mentioned by the OP is non-standard. It makes 3/4 look a lot like 6/8, which might be the intent here but is not normally what you would want to do. So it would still require manual override, though.
