mp3 export reduced to 64 kbit in rc

• Mar 15, 2015 - 14:20

Dear All,

in beta 2, the mp3 export produced sufficient sound quality. In RC the bitrate was reduced to 64 which does not sound good. Would it be possible to return to the old setting or maybe even add a control or make it read an optional settings file?

Thanks so much for the great work so far!

Cheers
Markus

Others complained that the mp3 files are too big...

But yes, being able to set this in preferences or via a command line switch would be good

As I mentioned before when this came up....

64kb/s is FM radio quality which ranges from gritty to downright distorted.

The minimum default compression should be 128kb/s

If users wish to compromise sound quality in for the sake of size then that should be up to them.

Those of us who do care about acceptable sound quality should not have an unnacceptable bit rate forced upon us.

In case you missed it, this was dealt with in Issue #50776, comment 14 . Instead of going back to 128kbps, which is still pretty bad, he decided to use LAME's VBR preset 2, which targets around 190kbps. Seeing as that's also LAME's default, and they know a bit about making high quality MP3s, that seems like the best option.*

The other part of this Issue is dealt with in Issue #50926: Allow setting preferences for the quality and bitrate of mp3 produced by MuseScore

*Or, at least, that's supposed to be the case, but my use of 2.0 outputs 128kbps. I've not yet exported an MP3 with the latest version.
