<SERIOUS CRASH> Musescore crashed and file will no longer open
Musescore 0.9.6 stable Linux Min (Ubuntu Lucid Lynx).
I was working on the file attached and chose 'append measure' when the program crashed. Usually I would be able to still open the file to edit it but now the program crashes as soon as I open the file and so I can't edit it at all.
I have attached the offending file - hope you can use it to work out what in the file is triggering the crash (or maybe it will open perfectly on your computer!).

Crash reproduced on Win Vista with 0.9.6 stable.
Can you attach the backup copy of the same file? It is a hidden file in the same folder as your original file called ".12.mscz,". It contains the previously saved version of the file.

I had trouble attaching the hidden file and had to rename it to a non-hidden file type to attach...hopefully you can just change the name back and that will give you the info you need, otherwise let me know if there is something else I should do.
I have also attached a different file which I created in version 0.9.5 stable which wouldn't open in 0.9.6 (though still opens in version 0.9.5) in case this helps. It is basically the same music lesson but the old095 file was created entirely in 0.9.5 then I couldn't open it in 0.9.6 so made an entirely new file typing in the contents from a hard copy.

I am trying to recreate your "old955.mscz" file starting from a new score using 0.9.5 to understand what part might be causing problems. If I create a piano score from scratch, select the first measure, and choose Create > Measures > Insert Horizontal Frame then nothing happens (the frame does not get added to the score).
Any advice on how I can re-created your file in 0.9.5?

Hi David,
Nothing fancy. I just create a new blank piano score then click on the first measure and do what you said and the frame gets added for me!
Are you able to add the horizontal frame in 0.9.6 ? I think you will find if you create the score in 0.9.6 then save it, close Musescore and try to reopen the file it probably won't open.

If I add a horizontal frame to my "12.mscx" file (above) using 0.9.6, save and reload, I get the crash you are describing. But if I add a horizontal frame in on a new score it works as expected and I don't have any problems.
In an attempt to recreate the problem from a new score I went back to 0.9.5 since you mentioned that the file was edited using 0.9.5. However, it does not look like 0.9.5 was ever able to add a Horizontal frame to the beginning of a piano score. Was your worksheet originally created using an older version of MuseScore?

First paragraph is correct - same happens for me (crash on 12.mscx but not a new score).
Need to clarify - the 12.mscx file, and the original '12.mscz' I posted were created using 0.9.6 and were at no time edited using 0.9.5. The reason for that file's creation was because I had a very similar file I made using 0.9.5 which would not open in 0.9.6, so I retyped it by hand into 0.9.6 (by reading from a paper copy I had printed) but then still had problems. So although they look very similar, the file '12.mscz' and its backup were made entirely in 0.9.6 and the file 'old095.mscz' was made entirely in 0.9.5, with no editing on different versions (since I know you can't open 0.9.6 files properly in 0.9.5 and 'old095' would not open at all in 0.9.6).

On a different note though, I was definitely always able to insert horizontal frames in my version of 0.9.5 (which is how it got there) and still can add them (I have an old computer with 0.9.5 on it and I can add horizontal frames to a piano score as we speak).
Using a text editor, I removed the Horizontal frame that contained the text: "In this key signature there is a flat sign written on the B line, so every time a B is written we will play B flat."
It now opens without crashing (see attached).
Any idea how to reproduce the crash?

Thanks for fixing my file! No idea how to reproduce I'm sorry, especially since it seems related to the horizontal frame, which I created some time before the crash occurred. The crash happened when I tried to append a measure, so only thing I would guess is that adding the measure the automatic stretching / resizing stuff that happens did something to the horizontal frame that it didn't like, but that is a complete guess.
I will get working on this file again (try putting the horizontal frame back in etc) and will post back if it happens again.

Reproduced the crash.
Using the file you attached with the horizontal frame removed, select the first bar, right click and choose to add a horizontal frame. Then choose the last bar, right click and choose 'append measure' - the program will crash every time and the file will no longer be able to be opened. If I append the measure before I add the horizontal frame there is no problem.
Unfortunately I tried creating a blank file with no notes or anything and did the same but it worked fine (no crash) but hopefully with it occurring consistently on this file that might help solve the problem anyway.

Edit: I finished my file by using append measure before I added the horizontal frame and all worked fine but once saved and I try to reopen the file it will not open.
I have one file which fails to open in the new version (I've checked others do open). It contains hours of work, so I'm reluctant to retype if there is a solution that avoids that.
On attempting to open in 0.9.6 I get a grey panel message headed: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, and stating mscore has "requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the applic's support team for more info"
This was a hefty edit job so I had added frames, and inserted measures/bars before the last time I saved it in 0.9.5. Foolishly, perhaps, I deleted 0.9.5 when I installed 0.9.6 yesterday.
Reading into a text editor was mentioned here, but I'm not technical enough to know what feature I should be looking to edit out.
In case it helps, I'm attaching the problem file.

The crash is caused by a slur between the measure 19 and 20. I don't know exactly why. I remove it. Open in musescore 0.9.6 and save again.
