Polyrhythm and time signature

• Dec 15, 2010 - 16:34

Dear all,
first of all a big thank you to the developers for this amazing software. I have been using it since the (not really stable) 0.9.3 version and since then it has become a reliable and more and more complete music notation software.
I mainly use it to transcribe parts for the concert band in which I play (for example to write the treble clef part from a bass clef trombone part ...).
I was wondering if it is possible to write a score with multiple instruments which uses at the same time different time signatures, in particular in the presence of polyrhythm and cross-rhythm . I am attaching an example, which you can find here , where the first instrument has a 12/8 time signature and the other ones a 4/4 signature.

Actually, I never had the need to use this kind feature, but maybe someone in the community may find it useful.

Best regards,
ABL

P.S: Sorry for my poor English

It's not really possible in a clean way. But you could achieve this type of result, especially for "equivalent" time signature such as 12/8 by hidding the time signature and put symbol from the Z palette to create the 12/8 time sig.

For the sample you gave, Lasconic's proposal is by far the best.

In case, for instance of 3/4 and 4/4 you could prepare the 3/4 staff on another file, then save in png, prepare "picture" of the concerned staff, and paste it in the 4/4 file..

Thank you for the quick and precise answer.
I think one can use this way for the "simple" example I posted and inserting the 3 eigth notes groups as triplets with invisible (hidden) brackets and "3". In such a way also the playback should be fine.

For what concerns more "exotic" time mixing (I can't imagine how a conductor would direct those mixtures) the solution of robert leleu, with some work on alignment should work as well.

Ciao,

I have come across a similar situation, when preparing part of Puccini's Tosca score, where the piano (orchestra) is playing a 6/8 beat, while the choir is singing 2/4. Of cours the piano is in fact doing triplet on the quarter, but it would be nice to have MuseScore to do exactly as in the original. See measure 877 in act I.

Any suggestions in MS 1.3? I found no references in the manual.
