OpenOMR
I have just downloaded to my Windows 7 machine the open source optical music recognition software openOMR from Sourceforge:

It is is apparently platform independent and done in java. There is no exe file and I can't find any installation instructions or indeed any documentation on the web. Anyone know anything about this project or how I can launch the programme? If I find anything out I will report back.

I see that OpenOMR is described at Sourceforge as pre-alpha which means it is at a very early experimental stage and will be very unstable. Caution is therefore necessary (don't use it on any mission critical or time limited projects).
By the way, the OpenOMR download directory contains an MSc dissertation in pdf format that reviews existing commercial OMR software and discusses the problems that make OMR tricky. Worth a look. I tried to attach it to this post but the file is too big.
