Global setting of playback levels of dynamics

• Dec 24, 2015 - 23:51

Composers love to fill their works with PPs or even PPPs. Or on the other end, FFs and even FFFs. But when Musescore plays these dynamics back, the music can be hard to hear.. or in the other extreme, you get blasted. It would be nice to set the playback levels of dynamic marks globally for a whole score to flatten the range of the playback levels (velocity) if needed. To do this one could enter in the desired velocity level of each dynamic in some playback preference window, or adjust a slider to flatten the range of playback levels. It is currently possible to adjust the playback level of each dynamic mark individually, but a way to do this globally would be great.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Using a custom palette with customized dynamic marks is a possible workaround, as you mentioned. But that doesn't help scores that have already been created. Some more direct way of controlling playback dynamic range would still be useful. Maybe something added to the playback panel? A "compression" slider?

Interesting that a compression effect is already under consideration. I would envision that a compression slider in the "play panel" would impose increasing limits on midi velocity. No compression = play score as is. More compression: impose increasingly strict minimum and maximum limits on velocity. Max compression: velocities set to one value. At any rate ...
