WHAT IS WRONG WITH MUSESCORE 1.0??

• Mar 9, 2011 - 17:41

I've been using Musescore version 0.9 for a few months and whilst there are a few facilities missing, on the whole I find it useful.

However, I made the mistake of downloading version 1.0.

When I load it up it asks for access to the internet and then hangs so that it is totally unusable.

What is wrong with version 1.0? How do I go back to a previous version?

I use Windows XP.

Help please!

Tom Sutcliffe.

MuseScore should not ask to access internet on startup except for checking for update. Can you send a screenshot of the message you have ? Where did you download your MuseScore 1.0 package?

MuseScore 1.0 is better than 0.9.X and it's discouraged to go back to the previous version.
If you still want to do so, you can download them here : http://sourceforge.net/projects/mscore/files/mscore/

sydenham,

it is not necessary to use capitals for a new thread. We will help you, like everybody else, if you ask a question in a normal way. No need to shout. I would say, you’d probably get less response with that behaviour even. It is what some people call „netiquette“.
I hope, we will get your MuseScore Installation back up and running soon.
Sorry for my comment :-)

I certainly hope that we would all be mature and grown up enough to not be so offended when someone else expresses an opinion. I understand that there is frustration at the situation. Being a not-so-computer-literate person myself, I sometimes don't like my computer, software, etc. so really frustration is well understood here. *However,* frustration is not an excuse for being spiteful, nor is it an excuse for returning the favor. Very few things ever are a good excuse for such behavior. I'm not necessarily directing this at Tom, as I'm sure we all have room for improvement, I know I sure as heck do. But we ought to be a little more civil in our speech and manners and our conduct with others. It will go a lot farther than we may think, as I'm a firm believer that anything that is degrading or demeaning is not worth our time or interest, and therefore should certainly hold no value therewith. Men and women have lived and died that others might be inspired to make the world a better place through kinder words, more willing minds, and softer hearts. *We* are the human race. *We* are better than that. It is within our grasp if we will simply reach out and take it.

Can you do a test: disable or even shut down avg and try to launch MuseScore?

Update:
What kind of AVG version are you running and on what windows version?

I can't reproduce the problem when manually triggering MuseScore to search for an update. I use AVG 10.0.1204 on Windows Vista.

In reply to by Thomas

I use AVG 9.0.872 which I understand is the latest version of AVG. I'm not sure why that is relevant. AVG would not come up with this message unless MS was attempting to access the internet.

Surely the issue is why is Musescore asking to access the internet/ and why is it crashing.

I will try the other tests you suggest and get back.

I must say that I am extremely busy and can't guarantee to do a lot of testing on this and feel extremely upset by comments from the other respondent who used words like "behaviour" etc when all I've done is spend time to sign on to this forum to notify you of what looks like a pretty serious problem.

I don't feel that I can continue to help unless I get treated with some respect.

I think to make such a serious issue about capitals (in most situations it is normal to put headings in capitals) is petty, bureaucratic and totally out of proportion.

Hi Tom,

Not everyone is a native English speaker. So let's not get our feelings hurt over this.

MuseScore wants to check a file on the internet to see whether there is a newer version available. This feature was added by the end of 2009 (#3851: Add a new release notify feature in MuseScore) and has so far not resulted in failure. You're the first one to report a problem, which doesn't mean we are not taking it seriously.

I'm thinking currently how we could reproduce this issue. I think I'm going to look for your version of AVG. I'll come back if I have some results.

MuseScore is indeed checking for new version at the start. To avoid this for your first run, you could rename the file in C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\MusE\MuseScore.ini to MuseScore.ini.old and launch MuseScore. It should not ask internet access anymore. But of course, we will never know if there is a incompatibility between MuseScore and your AVG version.

Thanks

This confirms what I've been saying.

I've done some more testing as follows:

I'd like to attach the error box I get from AVG but if I have to write html to do this then it's a non-starter.

There are three options when the box is shown:

1. allow all - causes the program to hang

2. allow for safe - causes the program to hang.

but I tried the third option this time:

3. Block - AND THE PROGRAM WORKED! (**** bureaucrats please note capitals used here for emphasis NOT for shouting *****)

Also, once you've done this once, the program remembers this and does not attempt to go the internet again.

I assumed this was recorded on an ini file and you've now confirmed that this exists.

Now,

If you attempt to upgrade from the menu system : HELP, CHECK FOR UPDATE then the same problems occur so this is not just a problem at start up.

I suggest the following:

1. The check "check for update" logic as this is clearly not working properly.

2. I suggest you remove the "check for update" from start up as this is not really necessary and will prevent many users from getting into the program at all. This obviously has been added to this version.

I don't think users editing .ini files is a good idea or acceptable work round. We are not all programmers.

I don;t think that saying this is a "compatibility problem AVG" is acceptable. Musescore has to work in all standard environment to be viable. Millions of people use AVG on windows XP.

Thanks for your help.

I'm afraid I can't enter into a lot of discussion on this forum at the moment as I've very busy but I may re- join later to suggest some important improvements that I think are needed to the software as I believe a good rival to Sibelius is needed. I still think that as an example of an elegant user interface nothing can beat Encore.

If someone can tell where there is a full list of changes/enhancement for this version I would be grateful as I can't see any changes. (other than hanging)

Regards,

Tom Sutcliffe.

You can read about the improvements made to MuseScore 1.0 from MuseScore 0.9.6.3 at
http://musescore.org/en/developers-handbook/release-notes-musescore-1.0

The update checker has been added in MuseScore 0.9.6, 8 months ago. MuseScore has been downloaded 900 000 since then and uou are the first one to report a problem with the update checker on startup and you mention AVG. That's why I made a wild guess that AVG, whose last version is 10.0.1204 and MuseScore might be somehow incompatible, but it can be something else.

If you pass by the forum again, can you tell us if your computer is directly connected to internet or use a proxy ?

You don't need to write HTML to attach an image, just press File attachment below the form and follow the simple instructions.

Tom, sorry if you felt offended by my posting about all capitals,
I tried to put it down politely, but seemed to have failed

This might be interesting in this context:

"When someone makes a mistake – whether it's a spelling error or a spelling flame, a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer – be kind about it. If it's a minor error, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before reacting. Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. If you do decide to inform someone of a mistake, point it out politely, and preferably by private email panget rather than in public. Give people the benefit of the doubt; assume they just don't know any better. And never be arrogant or self-righteous about it. Just as it's a law of nature that spelling flames always contain spelling errors, notes pointing out Netiquette violations are often examples of poor Netiquette."

Shea. V, Netiquette. (1997)

so I’ll cover my head with ashes.
