Indeed, I wonder how we can deal with it. I'm not a real mac user yet. Maybe a mapping table somewhere in the handbook is better than changing the whole handbook.
Regarding the actual bug, Ctrl does work. The only problem was that dotted lines looks the same than solid ones. Apparently is a qt bug. Dotted line space should be proportionnal to line width to always look dotted even when the line width is big and it appear to be wrong. I fix this in r19491 by creating a custom dotted line (on mac only). Apparently, this way qt respect the proportionnality.

You can then delete the selected measures with Fn+Backspace.
The selection is a dotted line but with very close dot... It might be related to the scale issue : http://www.musescore.org/node/1997
This means that all CTRL keystrokes in the handbook will need to be replaced for Cmd in case you are a Mac user?
