Ability to tie to next note of same pitch regardless of notes between.

It would be nice to have some way to achieve notation such as what is found in the first measure in bass clef in the score posted here http://musescore.org/sites/musescore.org/files/HummelPrelude.pdf

I see what was done there. He used slurs instead of ties and forced them into roughly the right position to resemble ties. But it would be nicer if you could just enter a tie in edit mode and it would tie to the next note of the same pitch even in this case. Even though in this instance, the notation is completely unnecessary since the pedal would make holding the notes down for their full durration indistinguishable from straight 16th notes; that might not be so in every case.

I don't think it is a good idea for MuseScore to automatically tie to what ever is the next note of the same pitch. You could get ties unexpectedly spanning multiple systems. Actually earlier versions (0.9.2 or 0.9.3 maybe) behaved like this. I think it is best to stick with slurs for now.

For now you may be right. I'm generally happy with the direction Musescore is developing. I would just question, though what the harm would be with unexpectedly having ties span multiple systems? Ctrl+Z would put it all back right again, but it would allow a certain flexability and increase they scope of musical language that can be printed easily, rather than resorting to hacks.

I guess ties worked differently back then so it was more worrisome that it probably is with how ties work in MuseScore today. For example when you added tie to a note during note entry, it didn't used to automatically add the next note for you. If you accidentally pressed the tie button but didn't enter the same pitch for the next note the tie would reappear when ever you finally entered a note of the same pitch. It made sense once you understood but it was still annoying because you had to leave note entry click on the tie and press delete. And for some reason it happened quite a lot for me :)
