Instead of having the numerical setting 1000 represent the normal full duration of any note regardless of the time value, how about making the setting be 1000 times the duration in beats - e.g., in 4/4, a quarter note would be 1000, an eighth 500, a dotted half 3000, etc. This way a specific amount of spacing between notes can be effected by reducing each numeric value by a fixed amount. Granted, a problem arises with very short notes (or odd tuples) where a fractional value must be rounded, but the actual timing error would be less than a millisecond, thus negligible.
