MIDI Keyboard wants to STACK my notes when I want them to MOVE FORWARD.

If I don't completely take my finger off a key, it is way too easy for all the notes after it to get "stacked on top" as a chord instead following in succession. Is there any way to force successive keyboard hits to "move forward" rather than start stacking?
